A chainlink fence, ripped open in front of a hole in the hill, surrounded by some trash and graffiti scrawls, and a chewed-up dirt track road that made a loop near the mouth of the mine and branched up the hill beside it. I watched the video of Bree Newsome taking down the Confederate Flag with all the requisite this-is-history-type chills. This looks to me like civil disobedience at its most moving and meaningful: a brave and fierce woman making a striking stand for her cause, calmly and with conviction. Then I saw this, tonight.
