ボストンテリアの歴史は1880年代のアメリカボストン市周辺で、 ブルドッグ と ブリンドルのブルテリア を元に作られました。 その頃は ボストンテリア ではなく、 ボストン ブル や アメリカン ブル テリア と呼ばれていて、 闘犬の血を色濃く引いていました。 当時のアメリカ原産の犬には愛玩タイプの犬が居なかったため、 このボストンテリアの原型の犬を更に改良して フレンチブルドッグ等を交配し小型化され、 闘犬としての強気な性格等を排除して 長い年月をかけてようやく トイ テリア にする事に成功しました。 1893年にアメリカの愛犬家団体に登録が認められ その際に ボストンテリア と名付けられました。 タキシードを来た様な紳士とも言われるこのボストンテリアは 現在でもアメリカで高い人気を誇っていて、 こんにちでは、アメリカ以外の国へも広まって、 日本でも、徐々に人気を高めています。

ボストンテリアが日本に入って来たのは、非常に古く、大正時代の事で、 当時は今の様に様々な犬種が日本に居た訳ではなかったので、 このボストンテリアは日本人にとって、非常に珍しい見目形をしていた事や、 室内犬が少なかった事もあり、とても歓迎されました。 しかし、ここ数年、日本では 癒し を求める人が多くなり、 ボストンテリアやフレンチブルドッグのような、 見た目が崩れた顔の気取らない愛嬌ある犬に 癒される と言う事で、 これらの犬種の数が徐々に増えて来ました。 1991年の頃、JKC(ジャパンケネルクラブ での登録犬数は126頭でしたが、 1999年には1,027頭の登録があり、 2007年には3,770頭と、徐々に増える傾向にあります。
