A Georgia Women's Political Action Committee. The State of Affairs. Since 2000, the scholarship on American women and politics has grown. Not surprisingly, every researcher has concluded that women are underrepresented in politics and party leadership. Only five of our 50 governors are women. State legislatures combined contain merely 24% women. Among Republican and Democratic state party chairs, only eight of 50 and 11 of 50, respectively, are women. Women need to be actively recruited to run for office.
