I am taking part in the LPC1100 challenge. Partly to improve my knowledge of ARM processors and to port my debug software to the platform. You can find more information in the downloads. Part of the challenge for me is to create an interactive command driven tool with a small footprint. My current implementation is less than 4k. If you have an lpc1114 and the kit for downloading to it, try my software in tims.c and let me know what you think of it.

Legacy Code

This is the code which works, is written to a different standard and those who wrote it are long gone. This would not be a problem if comprehensive test suites existed to protect you from inadvertantly stopping it working. In fact code becomes legacy code as soon as the person who wrote it leaves, or gets promoted.

The Art of Debugging. All programmers have to be able to debug, but it is a subject which is learnt not taught. We have programming standards to remove certain classes of fault but these only tend to affect the unit level, ie your personal battle with your own code before you confidently say to others that it is working. It is always more than you planned it to be. You are running elements of your system on different hardware. I have been involved with this in a number of different environments. As a general rule a prototype can only allow you to test the logic of your system not usually the timing.
