Slice of Life #26 – Sweet Evening Supper. Today was a rough day. Fidgety, spring feverish little 5 and 6 year olds, colleagues that are less than congenial and sharing lately, too much to do and not enough time to teach it, especially with the beautiful spring weather calling us outdoors. Ready to Flip a Coin. Celebrations – It’s Saturday! Wish I Would Have Read Nancie’s Advice Before I Peed My Pants. March 25, 2015. I really wish I had read Nancie Atwell’s advice to people considering the teaching profession. Before I peed in my pants. I have an amazing bladder. It’s a teacher’s bladder. On most days I can wait to pee until early evening. (I know my teacher friends will understand this.). It wasn’t always this way, though. Although I made the decision to go and started toward the bathroo...

Open is Open: #sol15. July 14, 2015. Kristen and I began today with a new group of teachers/administrators who are now on their way to becoming an HVWP community centered around writing, of course. From the start, from the silence around the familiar U constructed with moving tables and chairs Kristen and I remembered when this very building didn’t cooperate- a noisy air conditioner in our classroom, desks, windows without blinds. But even then, community was created. I’d say we are off…. Every time you ...

It’s Coming… : #sol15. August 4, 2015. August is here. Can’t miss the change in the air, the chill at night. It’s midway point for NY/NJ teachers on vacation. I remember turning the calendar slowly, conflicted because conflicts aside,August is my favorite month of the year because it’s MY MONTH-. I staked my claim to it on August 7, 1949, that is, my mom grabbed it for me, as a gift to her favorite sister, Sally and since then she has graciously shared it with me and most years, my first call is to her.

July 13, 2015. Back to work last week, just dipping my toes into our 2015 Institute and one of our many YWP camps. On Thursday morning riding up to New Paltz in some very misty, foggy rain for most of the trip by the time I was exiting and moving on to the ramp the sun was overpowering the clouds and by the time I arrived at the Institute’s summer site, I didn’t need to grab my pink umbrella from the back seat. But I was up at the spot, gray buildings on either side of a large parking area. Civilizat...

You did have quite the independent journey but you ended up successful! Patience is a virtue…that’s a saying for a reason, huh! May 1, 2015 at 8:23 pm. Taking Over the Education World- Innovative thinking and unlearning. May 1, 2015. This semester has really taught me a lot about myself as a learner. Now it has come to my attention that I am an innovator as well. For example when I was working on my independent learning project I was constantly asking myself, what can I do better to make myself grow as a learner? The Mindset of an Innovator. I believe that isolation is the enemy of innovation. The Last of My Daily Creates. April 30, 2015. Once again I d...

Global Math Task Twitter Exchange. Global Math Task Twitter Exchange. June 10, 2015. June 17, 2015. As the year comes to a close I look back at all the global connections and collaboration opportunities my students have had through making connections through Skype, Twitter, blog, and GAFE. One of the ways we have connected during math this year was through our weekly math exchange of a math problem or math task with Heidi Samuelson. Can you answer this? It is 84 #winston. This past weekend Heidi and I.
