Theology – Church – Culture – Imagination – Served with a Cup of Coffee. Bull;August 30, 2008 • 1 Comment. My turn to play, eh? This meme was started by Bruce. And I was tagged by Kerri. 1 What is your favorite faith-based hymn, song or chorus? 2 What was the context, content and/or topic of the last sermon that truly touched,. Convicted, inspired, challenged, comforted and/or otherwise moved you? When was the last time Kerri preached? THAT was certainly it… grin. From revjavadude’s cafe:. Consider the U...

History, doctrine, culture, books. So I read Niall Ferguson's small book The Great Degeneration: How Institutions Decay and Economies Die. Penguin Press, 2013). It's a theme I am familiar with from Mancur Olsen's. The Rise and Decline of Nations. 1984), with Ferguson adding three decades of new data and events to the argument. Two quick reactions to this rather depressing book. Continue reading "Religious Degeneration" ». Aug 22, 2014 at 03:52 PM in Christianity. Evangelicals Need Inoculation Too. Harper...

217th Assembly of Presbyterians. Tuesday, June 06, 2006. Mail Bag - 4: Pray for Us, Mary. The 217th General Assembly is only a few days away and the amount of mail I have been getting is a testament to that. I am getting so much mail that a lot of it has to be left with the my condo's concierge because they no longer fit my mailbox. Most of the mail have lately been urging me and other commissioners to vote against Recommendation 5 of the Theological Taskforce on the Peace Unity, and Purity of the Church.

217th Assembly of Presbyterians. Friday, April 14, 2006. Ecclesiology and "Seven Last Words From the Cross". I was recently informed that I have been randomly assigned to the Ecclesiology Committee, one of the 15 committes that will be deliberating during the 217th GA. It has only one doctrinal item in its agenda: to discuss the report of the Theological Taskforce on the Peace, Unity and Purity of the Church. Brought me some clarity. Do we really know what we are doing? Posted by NYAPC Elder at 10:35 PM.

217th Assembly of Presbyterians. Friday, April 21, 2006. Here are the Numbers. I always like to center myself before making significant decisions or wading into controversies. This is what I am undergoing now in preparation for the 217th General Assembly. Part of my centering process is to take a look at the numbers or the statistics concerning our denomination. The latest figures available from the PC(USA) Research Services. Do these figures bother me? Is important. Despite our denomination's lack o...

217th Assembly of Presbyterians. Saturday, June 17, 2006. A Day of Listening. Among the speakers were former moderators and presidents of Presbyterian seminaries - all of them urging the committee to adopt the report. We also heard from the taskforce members who worked for four years to craft the report. The first part of the day was also useful in testing the committee moderators' parliamentary skills and giving us a taste of the conservatives' strategy to gut the report. 217th Assembly of Presbyterians. Friday, May 12, 2006. Mail Bag - 3: A New Wind Blowing? The mail I have been getting recently gives me hope that there may be a new wind blowing through our denomination. No longer do the communications stake out the positions of any particular group; rather they are saying that no, not their organization's will be done - but God's will be done. The session of the First Presbyterian Church. The board directors of the Covenant Network. To all these letters. Choir One song ...

217th Assembly of Presbyterians. Wednesday, May 31, 2006. Assassinated for their Faith. As I prepare for the general assembly, I cannot help but despair that our denomination is seemingly consumed by the issue of sexuality. My worldview was recently yanked back in place with a series of messages circulated in the listservs I subscribe to - and I hope it will stay in place during the general assembly. Where so many pastors and church workers have died in a similar time period. Jose Doton, active member of...
