Next Communications: September 2013
http://nextcommunications.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 12, 2013. Ft Worth @StarTelegram requires Facebook for comments; good for discourse, bad for trolls. In a move that I hope will send some of those online trolls to cower under their bridges away from the light, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram announced this week that they will now require users to log in to Facebook to use their commenting system. In his announcement, S-T executive editor, Jim Witt explained. I get this 100% RT @MonicaNagyFWST. Why is this important for PR? Since a functi...

Tuesday, April 30, 2013. First Follower Leadership and the Communications Pro. In the last few months I've had various people share or present on the (now widely popular) video, First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy. It's a pretty simple, great video lesson on leadership from Derek Sivers. If you haven't already, take three minutes and watch it:. So why is the first follower leadership lesson important for communication professionals? Sivers sums it up nicely:. Are you a first follower?

Thursday, February 20, 2014. RPIE for the #schoolPR Pro: Communication Plan Checklist #tspra14. School public relations programs have a much greater chance of success with proactive, strategic planning that incudes measurabIe objectives set forth by research and evaluated. The following is the RPIE for the School PR Pro checklist. I created to share with other school public relations pros to guide them through the 4-step process - Research, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. Is unbelievably sad...

Friday, October 18, 2013. Agenda-setting theory: helped or hindered by social media? I frequently read the editorials and columns in the opinion section of my hometown newspaper. I like their digital subscription option these days since the print version mostly ended up in the recycling bin unless I needed to wrap something breakable. But that's a different story. I like catching up on what those veteran newspaper journalists have to say in and about this city. Did you catch it? 8220;In other words, the ...
Next Communications: On Working Together

Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Recently held a joint program with our friends at AAF Fort Worth. And Social Media Club Fort Worth. To host author/speaker Jackie Huba. For a fun evening at Four Day Weekend Theater. This night on the town took well over four months to coordinate, as the organizations' presidents met and e-mailed each other to work out details. One day before, March 26, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. And WFAA-TV announced their own partnership. A content sharing partnership. Both of these partnershi...

Propeller Communications: July 2008
http://propellercomm.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 29, 2008. Honk if you're human! I read a great short piece in Wired this month by Josh McHugh based on Tom Vanderbilt's Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (And What It Says About Us). The book basically argues that our traffic problems are a microcosm of the inefficiencies that rule our behavior. He suggests that, for example, data packets have little difficulty maneuvering their complex highway. Why? This thought made me consider the little inefficiencies that can keep me short of my best.

Thursday, June 12, 2008. The only object in life is to grow. Very early, I knew that the only object in life was to grow." - Margaret Fuller. Every once in a while, I come across a quote that I can't let go of. Such is the case with the above quote from Margaret Fuller. A writer from the early 1800's. It's not hard to apply this thought to your own life, as this simple thought can take on various meanings. I've also ventured into other avenues, including social bookmarking( Delicious. To name a few. ...

The Waiting Room: December 2014
http://lifeswaitingrooms.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 8, 2014. Waiting . . . . Today kind of sucked. I really wanted to write something more poetic or even just more thoughtful, but I don't have it in me. In fact, I kind of feel like curling up in my p.j's and having a good cry. And maybe some ice cream. But advent is stopping me. In church. But I don't ever remember celebrating advent. We've been at our current church. For 12 years. I don't ever remember celebrating advent, until this year. Apparently until exactly when I needed it. My hea...

Friday, May 17, 2013. Waiting for the Senior Slam. Here are a few examples:. All shorts and skirts are too short. This is true for kids, teenagers, 20 somethings, and especially everything in my closet. You can often hear me say, "This morning on The Today Show. I haven't started calling it The Today Program. Yet I think that happens when I get my AARP card. If I miss the early showing of a movie, not only do I refuse to wait for the late showing, I simply opt to wait for the movie to come out on Redbox.

Saturday, June 15, 2013. Waiting for the Grass to Grow. Growing up, I made a lot of assumptions about my dad. We took things apart, buried them, lit them on fire, broke them, lost them, and crashed them. Very rarely did we use anything for its intended purpose and never once did we fill in a hole. Our childhood left my dad's yard full of holes, his tools broken or buried in the yard, and his cars wrecked more than once. I always assumed my dad just didn't care what his yard looked like. This blog contain...

The Waiting Room: A letter to my husband the day after Father's Day
http://lifeswaitingrooms.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-letter-to-my-husband-day-after.html
Monday, June 22, 2015. A letter to my husband the day after Father's Day. Well, I blew it. Yesterday, while the Internet exploded with sentimental pictures of daddies and daughters dancing at weddings and selfies of fathers and sons fishing and drinking beer, my Facebook sat silent. It's not for a lack of pictures. Just this week our tweenage daughter rolled her eyes in disgust as I forced her to snap a picture with you at her fifth-grade promotion ceremony. You get the kids up, fed, and ready for school...
The PR Playbook: October 2010
http://theprplaybook.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
October 05, 2010. Who Really Wins Championships.Offense or Defense? I’ve gone back and forth about writing this post because just when I think I’ve made up my mind, I talk myself out of the position I previously took. About one month ago, I had the conversation with three different individuals about the infamous quote: “Offense wins games, defense wins championships.”. Initially, I was firm in my thinking that is not the case in public relations because we are more comfortable, and prefer, to play offense.

March 29, 2010. The Real Purpose of a Face Mask. This past fall I was sitting in the stands at a high school football game with one of my best friends Jill. We had a very interesting conversation that went somewhat like this:. When I was young, I thought the purpose of a face mask was so that the coaches had something to grab when talking to the players. Because buzz words are big in PR, I'm going to share how some are fitting for this post:. Special Note: As many miles as I have gotten out of the previo...

Saturday, November 8, 2014. On PR, #PRSA and Professional Relationships. When communication missteps occur, it's common to sit back, ridicule and say we're learning from the actions of others (read: case studies). But do you ever consider the individuals actually dealing with these challenges? Do you ever think about the professionals responsible for cleaning up PR messes? Of course it can. But in my experience, working alongside dedicated volunteers is the perfect way to ripen relationships. My hope thi...
