Ng Po Wan was born in Taishan, Guandang, China. In the 1800s many people from this area bravely explored new worlds, some going to North America and helping to build the National Railroad. It is with the Taishan sense of adventure that Ng Po Wan went to the School of Fine Arts at the University of Philippines. Painting still-lifes is not as easy as people think. Strictly speaking it is not sufficient to render the superficial likeness of objects. Texture is very important. That is to say, we must be able to show the difference between glass, pottery and porcelain; and also be able to suggest the odour of fish, or the fragrance of flowers to the viewer’s sense through pictorial representation. Ng took inspiration from the everyday scenes he saw. At times I am confounded by my work and cannot paint at all.
