Athens | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2015/03/12/athens
Teaching Greek children is like watching France play rugby: you never know what you’re going to get…. Stoa of Attalos: the Athenian version of the local mall. I just spent two weeks in Greece preparing a Greek boy and his twin sisters for 10 and 12 entrance examinations at a school in England. Highlights included spending a long, sunny weekend at a holiday home in Lagonissi, spending another long, sunny weekend skiing near Delphi – I wonder if the oracle saw that one coming! March 12, 2015. You are comme...
Cold Turkey | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2014/08/31/cold-turkey
Working hard as usual…. Pool, beach or hammock? Hammock, beach or pool? So I had the choice of pool, beach or hammock every afternoon, plus the use of wi-fi throughout the grounds and the opportunity to participate in a host of sporting activities, including tennis, volleyball and Flyboarding. All you can eat…. The facilities were fabulously comprehensive, including a huge swimming pool, volleyball and tennis courts, artificial five-a-side pitches, table tennis and pool tables, a sauna and spa and a wate...
Hong Kong? Phooey! | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2014/06/06/hong-kong-phooey
Central Plaza at sunset. When they built Hong Kong, they put the sun in the wrong place. It’s always either behind a building, hidden by a cloud or on the wrong side of the island to see a decent sunset. Having said that, I did arrive during the monsoon season, which didn’t help! Victoria Harbour from the Peak. The views from both during the day were spectacular, but it got better and better as night fell. My only mistake was in leaving 20 minutes before the Symphony of Lights was due to start! Dead cats...

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog. Here’s an excerpt:. The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 8,800. Times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it. A photographer’s bucket list | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2014/05/02/a-photographers-bucket-list
A photographer’s bucket list. What am I supposed to do with this? Bloodhound land speed record attempt, Hakskeen Pan, South Africa. Safari in Okavango Delta/Kalahari in Botswana (Kwando Safaris or Audley Travel for Zambezi Voyager houseboat cruises to see carmine bee-eaters). Pyramids, Abu Simbel in Egypt. Zambia – Kaingo Camp for hides (bee-eaters in October). Wildebeest migration in September in Ngorongoro Crater. Sri Lanka (whales and leopards with Exodus) and Maldives. Jordan – Petra. And then it all went bear-shaped… | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2014/06/30/and-then-it-all-went-bear-shaped
And then it all went bear-shaped…. Beautiful girls are like polar bears: they’re hard to find, and you try to get as close as you possibly can before they turn their backs and walk away. We saw 13 bears on my trip to Spitsbergen, but there was only one girl for me. Sadly, she was already taken, so I’d better talk about the bears…. The only Frenchman I know called Eric. A blonde Norwegian ‘adventure concierge’. 8221; – but I was inspired by a talk given by Paul Goldstein last year in London. Pau...However...
Tigers and temples | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2013/11/23/india
When you tour India with a beautiful Dutch blonde named after a Norse fertility goddess, it’s bound to be an adventure…. My adventure took place in November 2013 and lasted for two weeks, during which time I witnessed the best and worst of Delhi, saw two tigers and photographed the world’s most photographed building. Charmed to meet you…. After 24 hours touring the capital, we left for the tiger sanctuary at Bandhavgarh, and most of us were happy at the prospect of a bit of peace and quiet. We were d...
Working with fractions | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2014/09/15/working-with-fractions
People don’t like fractions. I don’t know why. They’re difficult to begin with, I know, but a few simple rules will help you add, subtract, multiply and divide. Multiply the denominators together. Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second. Multiply the numerator of the second fraction by the denominator of the first. Take the result of Step 2 and add or subtract the result of Step 3. Put the result of Step 4 over the result of Step 1 in a fraction. If possible, divide ...
Quiz for dads | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2015/01/06/quiz-for-dads
This isn’t a pub quiz – not even close. It’s a quiz for dads who want to work out whether evolution is still heading in the right direction – or has gone into reverse! This test is a chance to compare experiences of fatherhood and examine your feelings about your children’s progress. Is it pride or pain, joy or frustration, agony or ecstasy? Answer each question in the polls below. The results will be shown once you’ve voted. If you’re still winning gold in the family Olympics, congratulations! 3 At what...
Breaking Bad | Nick Dale
https://nickdale.me/2013/10/14/breaking-bad
That was my reaction when the credits rolled after the final episode of Breaking Bad. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a great concept, and I gave it a 7 out of 10 overall – but that was only half-way through the first series! It bewilders me that its user rating on IMDb is 9.5. The problem was that Breaking Bad. I couldn’t even be bothered to look up from playing Tetris on my iPhone! I was glad she had to suffer. Now, was that what I was supposed to think? Another way in which. As we pray he escapes...
