Other 17th-C. Lit. Nicholas R. Jones. The Folger ancestry is from Frank Hadley Ginn, via his mother Millicent Ophelia Pope. Her great-great grandfather was Joseph Pope, whose mother was Bathseba or Bethshua Folger, daughter of Peter Folger of Nantucket (1617-1690) and his wife Mary Morrill. From a website on Nantucket genealogy. Peter Folger’s other daughter, Abiah, was the mother of Benjamin Franklin. This is what Franklin writes in the Autobiography about his mother’s family:.

Other 17th-C. Lit. Nicholas R. Jones. F H Ginn loved classical music. He collected bound scores of Wagner operas and Beethoven symphonies. He collected musical autographs: I recall a presentation piece by Mendelssohn, a Weber piece - and I have a Haydn letter that he bought in the early 20th century. He was a member of the Musical Arts Association, the board of trustees of the Cleveland Orchestra, in its founding years. He was chair of the Building Committee for Severance Hall.

Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum: A modernist look for Peter Grimes
http://worldsmuseum.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-modernist-look-for-peter-grimes.html
Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Saturday, February 8, 2014. A modernist look for Peter Grimes. Operas are servants of two masters: the plot and the music. That is, the plot often belongs to one period and the music comes from another. Where the two can cross purposes is in the visual design: if the plot is Renaissance, say (think Gianni Schicchi, Don Carlo. Renaissance costume: Don Carlo. 19th-century costumes: Glyndebourne, 2004. San Franciso Opera 1976.

Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Tuesday, December 18, 2012. I almost didn't go to Apollo's Fire's Messiah. This Christmas. I get tired of the endless repetitions of the Christmas section, which so debilitates the power of this complicated and not altogether holiday-friendly oratorio. But Cleveland Classical asked me to review it, so we went. As usual, here's my review. If you like it, I hope you'll subscribe to ClevelandClassical.com. Links to this post.

Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Saturday, March 30, 2013. Admissions: Warning: spoilers and harsh critique. The supposedly feel-good film Admissions. 160;(directed by Paul Weitz, with Tina Fey as Princeton admissions director Portia Nathan) seemed to me a gratuitous set of cruelties perpetrated on any woman unfortunate enough to be in cameras range. (Read on with spoilers.). Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Oberlin, Ohio, United States.

Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Brahms and the still, small voice. Last week I heard the Cleveland Orchestra perform an all-Brahms evening - the Academic Festival Overture (some thought it was jovial; I found its cheeriness pretty forced); the great 4th symphony (formally structured, massive, earnest, and astonishing); and the violin concerto, with German violinist Julia Fischer. What you see in this excerpt from the string part...
Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum: Canterbury sounds
http://worldsmuseum.blogspot.com/2014/01/canterbury-sounds.html
Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Canterbury Cathedral is not only dazzling complex and beautiful to the eye - the long reach of the nave, the high Gothic arches with their leaping secondary columns, the light pouring in the nave in the intervals of low winter sunshine - but also to the ear. We heard the dress rehearsal of Messiah. And then, different in that this was liturgical music, service music, sung as part of a meditative e...

Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Monday, July 8, 2013. Here are some of the trees, on the campus of Connecticut College. I went walking this morning at 6:30 along the "Old Norwich Road," on the west side of campus. The road is, according to the sign, the second oldest "turnpike" in the USA. Quieter than the Ohio Turnpike! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Oberlin, Ohio, United States. Professor of English, Oberlin College.
Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum: London as fabric
http://worldsmuseum.blogspot.com/2014/01/london-as-fabric.html
Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Thursday, January 23, 2014. Walking around the streets of London is a time "warp" in more than the Star Trek. Meaning (is that the source? It is as if the streets are warp and weft of a colorful fabric, maybe a batik, that wonderful Indonesian cloth where the threads are laid down, painted or dyed, and then rewoven (I think). Townhouses (early 19th century? The London eye, the Houses of Parliament, and a northern sunset.

Nicholas R. Jones: The World As Museum. A blog about literature, art and music. Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Massaccio, The Expulsion. I wrote the poem below to keep pace with my students in my Milton course, who were creating poems, paintings, and pieces of music based on/working off their reading of Milton. It's my way of putting a new spin on the ending of Paradise Lost. The last four lines of which are quoted as the epigraph). Adam and Eve Walk Out of Paradise. Through Eden took thir solitarie way.
