Meaning of the word Doula. The word Doula comes from the Greek word for Servant or Handmaiden , the modern role of a doula is to support a woman and her family through pregnancy, birth and beyond. As a doula I believe in supporting a woman to achieve a positive birth and to become the best mother she can be. Research has shown that having a doula present at your birth can:. Reduce the chance of Caesarean by 50%. Reduce the need for pain medication. Reduce the length of first time labours by up to 2 hours.

My son was born in 2005 in hospital in Cornwall and my daughter was born at home in 2013. I currently live in North cornwall.
