the fragments that remain: April 2013

http://www.thefragments.org/2013_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 11, 2013. The beautiful struggle: a lone fisherman. Tries to catch a meal in Ali Bagh. One of my biggest challenges living/traveling abroad has always been the transition back to the US. Even after making this shift dozens of times, I still fail to maneuver between the realities of the two worlds I find myself in: for example, the fact that 22 out of every 25 children will drop out of school by the 5. 8230;I was speechless. Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. Instead...

Sunday, December 1, 2013. Dealing with the cracks: Art and entrepreneurs. Although I’ve always dreamed of being an artist, my stick figure drawings or Power Point. Presentations have somehow never quite qualified me. According to. One of Pakistan’s most well known novelists. However, my dreams might not be completely hopeless. In a talk last week at the. Conference, Mohsin Hamid painted a simple yet profound [re]definition of art:. Art is the unwillingness to accept the way things are. As there is no suc...

Wednesday, July 3, 2013. The impossibility of replacing a person: Life after a near death experience. Clipper and Douglas St, Noe Valley, SF. In his book “Man's Search for Meaning,” Holocaust survivor Dr. Viktor Frankl writes:. When the impossibility of replacing a person is realized, it allows the responsibility which a man has for his existence and its continuance to appear in all its magnitude. But for some reason, I didn’t…. Being human always points, and is directed, to something, or someone, other ...

Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Perfection: the Enemy of Purpose. Although many of us have come to the conclusion that a meaningful life can only be achieved through meaningful work, I've sadly made the mistake of assuming this meaning is only achieved by people "changing the world" (e.g., the MLKs, Mandelas and Mother Teresas). Through our work at Amal Academy. However, we are finding that it doesn't take Red-Cross-like organizations or Mother-Theresa-type leaders to make a difference. What the fellows are te...

Thursday, July 3, 2014. Developing happiness / coming home in an "unlikely place". The Amal Academy Fellows during our first session together. Every year, on the eve of my birthday, I enjoy what many find to be the oddest movie tradition: the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Although I appreciate their skepticism, I've begun to think that perhaps the film somehow symbolizes home for me. Not because of the protagonist's name (although that might play a small part! After nearly a year struggling through th...

Robert Kennedy once said, “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events.” Although his life was cut short just a few weeks ago, Professor Greg Dees. Has undeniably bent the history of my own life and has. Radically changed more than just a small portion of events throughout the world. During my first class with Professor Dees. Monday, August 15, 2011. Gandhi, independence(s) and discovering unity in a world of division. About one week before Pakistan and India celebrated their separate independence days. I found myself standing in the final footprints of the man who largely inspired this independence but forever opposed the division that it created. Overcome with humility and awe, my friend Bavidra. Each quote seemed to build off of each other, amassing into a wave of wisdom that finally overtook us with the following idea:.

Sunday, June 19, 2011. On Father's Day, lessons from our beloved Pops. About two and half months later, on May 18, 2011, our beloved Pops was promoted to glory. This blog post isn’t about morning Pops, however, although there has unfortunately been lots of that. Rather, it’s meant to welcome others to join in the celebration of his life. And to continue his legacy by sharing the stories. That forever shaped and changed my life during the 26 years that I physically spent with him. How’s it going? Just tak...

Nicole A. ℳurray. Skip to primary content. I’m Nicole. In the winter of 2010, I packed two suitcases and moved from Roswell, Georgia, to New York City on a whim. For a long while I scrimped, saved, tried, savored, regret, won, failed, and had a good public cry. Or two. I now work at an educational technology company as a go-between for Content/Editorial and IT/Dev because I’m 1) technologically savvy, and 2) grammatically literate, and have a number of amazing projects on the side. And portfolio of work.

Our Happy Family

Thursday, November 3, 2011. At the pumpkin patch. We ended up getting 75lbs. worth of pumpkins! My mom got these glow wands for the kids for Halloween but we forgot to get them. We had them out the other day and we had to leave the house dark the whole day so they could play with them. Us at Aaron's work for trick or treating. Me and the kids at Sharon's work for trick or treating. Olivia would not let me get a good picture of her in her costume. At the ward trunk or treat. Everyone's having so much fun!
