June 26, 2015. Hello, my friends, I hope you’re drying out. June was definitely a stormy month. Many of us were reminded that gloomy weather can drag us under if we’re not alert. Lack of sunshine makes us tired. And tired tempts us to be grumpy. As the Fourth of July approaches, let’s focus on freedom. The spiritual and emotional freedom to live beyond our feelings that shift faster than the weather. Let’s look at some emotions that pull us down. Let’s ask:. Am I easily offended? See if there is any offe...

Restless in Suburbia: A Holy Discontent. August 23, 2013. As I settle into this Chicago suburb choosing paint colors, shower curtains, and no MSG on my oriental take-out, I fear settling. Not making-a-home settling. Military moves made me an expert at that. I mean spiritually, at the soul-level, settling. My mind tends to nestle into comfort and cruise in familiar territory. But then there’s this recurring, niggling reminder:. This isn’t just for you. About to snap or spin or both. All I know is I’ve...

August 31, 2016. It’s deadline day and I’m late to the keyboard. I procrastinate writing about my bad habit, a mindset formed before my memory. I confess: I’m a peace-keeper. We’ve all experienced that two-ton elephant in the room. It sits there, fat and sassy, because no one will mess with it. We ignore it with trivial chatter or we get quiet. You know, that. Quiet The problem is obvious, but, Ssshhh we want peace. A peace-keeper feeds the elephant. Problems grow as we sit, intimidated and voiceless...

What’s in your Bucket? June 25, 2016. I typed away on chapter three of my book project, excited to make progress. A few hours later, I stared at the computer screen, asking, Why am I doing this? News of shootings in Chicago and terror in Orlando made me consider better ways to use my time. My writing project seemed trivial and I wanted to quit. God, give me perspective. Bring me back to my why. It’s a tad lost at the moment. What goes down in the well comes up in the bucket. It depends on what we put in ...

May 29, 2015. You may remember, when my grand-babies visit, our kitchen table becomes the center of all things crafty: crayons, glitter, stickers, you name it. Braden, our budding paleontologist, is into drawing our family. Nine stick figures are personalized by height and hair while another stands out with a big circle drawn in her middle. That’s Aunt Violet whose expecting little Luna Sophia in July. Because I don’t need them. So, what can we cut? What’s unnecessary and in the way? The same old stuff.

Naked Truth: Identity Lost. August 4, 2015. So, tell me, if you woke up tomorrow and could do that one thing you’ve always wanted to do, what would it be? If I was in a comic strip instead of Diana’s counseling office, this is where you’d sketch a question mark over my head or pencil in chirping crickets. I sat there, unmoving. Un. Inundated with ideas and waiting to see the perfect one twinkling on the wall, framed with blinking arrows, I wasted time fretting about wasting time. Opportunities tangle...
