Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Do As Wildflowers Do. Although I never seem to have my "big camera" for these unexpected delights, the wildflowers still look stunning:. As the Texas wildflowers continue to dazzle the landscape with their whimsy and beauty, the following Rumi poem has also been occupying my thoughts:. Very little grows on jagged rock. So wildflowers will come up. You have been stony for too many years. Not a wildflower, but certainly a "rose among thorns.". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Monday, June 8, 2015. Lost Objects, Found Souls. I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. 8213; John Muir. John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir. Austin may not be the walking paradise that Mr. Muir usually traversed, but it does offer its oddities [“Keep Austin Weird”] for the curious, observant walker. For example, see the photos to the left with a very large fuzzy spider and a blooming cactus. Enter y...

Wednesday, April 13, 2011. While living and working in Japan many years ago I first had to learn the distinguished social art of exchanging business cards, or meishi. Unlike the informal exchanges here, in Japan the introduction of one’s profession and title importantly establishes the right degree of respect and deference owed in the relative social situation. Consequently, when receiving a meishi. Being exchanged to establish social standing. Although in some cases classic narcissism could be at pl...

Monday, July 23, 2012. Life Lessons on the Subway Commute. I've been serenaded by a mariachi band and by a trumpet playing “Amazing Grace” [very loud in the car! In the stations I've heard a musical saw [Atlantic Terminal], live jazz [Union Square], and a Barry White wannabe [Penn Station]. And, at least once a day, I am humbled by some situation that screams at me to look at how blessed my life and circumstances really are. For an idea of how much money I have found, see the picture here of the bag.

Sunday, June 21, 2015. I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive. With all the recent rain in Austin, people, flora and fauna seem disoriented. For instance, after particularly heavy flooding a few weeks ago, I almost tripped over this grumpy old turtle sitting in the middle of the trail with a [expletive] look on his face:. Then shortly after that I saw this beautiful rose. Blooming on the opposite side of the fence. John of ...

Saturday, August 6, 2011. Mushrooms on the Greenbelt. Our physical bodies are pretty autonomous, repairing, building, and maintaining its cells on autopilot. Our mental, spiritual, and emotional selves, though, can take a lesson from the mushroom kingdom. We have all we need to grow and expand; the outside conditions are already present. The only internal ingredients we need to add are our desire, intention, and faith, as we define them. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Enter your email address:.

Wednesday, February 2, 2011. It's Groundhog Day: Do You Know Where Your Goals Are? In the blink of an eye, four months have passed since my last blog entry. A full season- in fact, one-third of a year- has elapsed and all the while my thoughts carried ideas for blogs I had every intention of writing once a month. Yet, here I am without a published blog since last September. Myriad methods exist for creating and specifying goals, some of which I have covered in previous blogs. 1. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Monday, September 20, 2010. A Monument to Unfinished Business. Upon reflection after visiting these sites, one could easily question why the parishoners wanted to build a new cathedral in the first place, and why they just abandoned the project on the eve of completion. On the other hand, how amazing that something incomplete and rife with an unfortunate history can stand its ground as a beautiful monument 140 years later! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
