nihon ni imasu

Tuesday, 7 December 2010. From the moment I first arrived in Japan my impressions have been constantly changing, and will always continue to do so. A module at my home university last year required us to read the book Evanescence and Form by. Charles Shiro Inouye . This book sought to explain the balancing act that ritual and change play in Japanese culture. Whenever I go on a trip to another area, it’s become second nature to buy a souvenir for the home-stay family. Previously I always skipped...These a...

nihon ni imasu: October 2010

http://nihonniimasu.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Friday, 22 October 2010. After watching Life through a lens, the thing that I appreciated the most about Annie Leibovitz’s technique is not a particular photographic technique, but simply her approach and treatment of the subject. The final photograph of John Lennon and Yoko Ono was particularly strong. Subjects are not always so open-minded about how they allow themselves to be portrayed, but this is also a testimony to Leibovitz’s approach. In future experiments I would like to encourage my subjects to...

nihon ni imasu: Japanese People

http://nihonniimasu.blogspot.com/2010/10/japanese-people.html

Tuesday, 5 October 2010. Despite the encouragement to show a portrait of an individual for this post, I took photographs of two friends, Aya-san and Mai-san; for two main reasons. Firstly, I always meet these two girls together. They are both studying English, they hang out together all the time on campus and go shopping together at Shinsaibashi at the weekend. From the short time I've known them it seems difficult to imagine one without the other. This time, I've probably been too cautious to give any r...

nihon ni imasu: September 2010

http://nihonniimasu.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 September 2010. This is a quiet street in Ikenomiya. I am doing a home-stay further down the road, and this picture was taken during my morning cycle to university. This busy junction can add 5 minutes onto my journey depending on the lights. This main road is straddled by car and bike showrooms, bridged in with a repeating cycle of restaurants, karaoke and convenience stores. Tuesday, 14 September 2010. First impressions of Japan. Nagasaki gave me my first real impression of Japan, although i...

nihon ni imasu: Attempts to put inspiration into practice…

http://nihonniimasu.blogspot.com/2010/11/attempts-to-put-inspiration-into.html

Tuesday, 9 November 2010. Attempts to put inspiration into practice…. This blog post does not have a particular theme related to Japanese culture. While taking photographs in Nara and of a band and their audience in a live house, I recalled some of the inspirations from the documentaries watched in class; in particular, War Photographer. These two parts of his approach to photography have stuck with me and I have made (some) progress in emulating this inspiration (or at least I would like to think so).

Nihon Musings

Sunday, November 9, 2008. It’s with pride and nostalgia that I sit down and write this latest musing. Recently Viz Media began re-releasing all of the Ranma ½. Anime in fairly priced box sets of all seven seasons of the TV series, the OVA series, and the two movies. With new ease of access to the series, I could finally watch all of the TV series, all one hundred sixty-one episodes of it and tonight, I finished it. Oh, and the Dunbine. Write-up hasn't been forgotten, I've just been sidetracked with lots ...

Nihon ni ikimashou. | Let's go to Japan!

Let's go to Japan! Kyoto, 16.7. Morgens...

A journey to Japan in 2007. A Piece of Paper in My Wallet. Wednesday, 21 November 2007. A Piece of Paper in My Wallet. I found a piece of paper in my wallet: it has a name and email address of a charming young lady we met in Kooenji during the Awa-Odori. I thought Kummari had it but I was the guilty one here. She asked us to email her. I will, I promise. Pictures. I have just shown a few pictures and picture collections to my friends and relatives. Wednesday, 5 September 2007. Yesterday we visited Kamaku...

You can be you, let me be me. Nov 13th, 2008 at 8:26 PM. Today I receceived a mail it kind of made me feel sick. How did you expect me to feel, I dont know. It said in the subject, I love you. And when I opened the mail it said I miss you. When I showed my friend she said "chotto hen ne". Watashi ha chotto hen na inshou wo watashi ni nokoshimashita. He left me with a strange feeling. Green in Japan | Life in the Land of the Rising Sun

Life in the Land of the Rising Sun. So many things here in Tokyo! So, many interesting things have happened since I last posted, one of which is that Alexandra has arrived here! It’s really nice to have a friend here in Japan. But since I have a lot to talk about here, I’ll get back to Alexandra in a bit. Pictures of the shrine can be found in one of the links down below. Http:/ www.youtube.com/watch? I went there later and will talk about it in a bit. As for flower arrangement, we were able to watch a m...

I don't speak this language.

I don't speak this language. Maggie lied and said I was a poet. Maggie and I walked around campus discussing our plan of action. Let me just remind you that this is Japan; we are wearing slippers in school. At least, I am. Maggie has some respectable shoes specific to walking in school. I had to look like Peg Bundy all day. Btw, this whole peace sign. Thing has nothing to do with me becoming a hippie and everything to do with Japanese culture: this is their cheese. The Longest Heart Attack. Human enough ...
