A slightly less successful trip to Islay. June 6, 2016. November 5, 2016. Base station downloading data from the Islay Herring Gulls. After successfully recapturing one of our GPS tagged Herring Gull on Pladda, Arran I was hoping for similar success at the next colony – Coul Point on the west coast of Islay. Compared to Pladda with around 200 breeding Herring Gull pairs, the colony at Coul Point is much smaller with 31 pairs, as well as a couple of Lesser Black-backed Gulls. 4A7:C hatched two chicks.

At the end of July I travelled down to the south coast to spend a few days birding and ringing at Dungeness Bird Observatory before attending one of the BTO’s ringing courses at Icklesham (which was absolutely fantastic! July 10, 2016. November 5, 2016. The purpose of the visit was to attach GPS loggers to immature gannets for Jana Jeglinski’s research. However, unfortunately, it was far too windy for catching birds on cliffs – as you can see here. So instead we spent two days exploring the island and photographing Gannets. The Gannet colony on the island is expanding and they breed within a few metres of the clifftop path – meaning you can get incredibly close without disturbing them. Trip to Lancashire and one of my favourite RSPB. March 28, 2016. November 5, 2016. Earlier this month I had a trip to one of my favourite reserves, the RSPB’s Leighton Moss. And the first time I saw marsh harriers glide across the reedbeds. So I was very excited to visit again after a good few years, unfortunately no bitterns or bearded tits, or otters which always eluded me when I was younger, but plenty of marsh harriers! There was a stunning Snipe right in front of the Jackson hide with some Teal.
