対象地域を含む北部九州には、日産自動車 株 九州工場、トヨタ自動車九州 株 、ダイハツ九州 株 及び日産車体 株 九州工場が立地し、世界有数の自動車生産拠点として着実に産業集積が進捗してきました。 さらに、現在、日本の総消費電力の半分は電気モータで消費されていますが、そのモータには、ネオジムやディスプロシウム等の希土類元素 レアアース を利用した永久磁石が使用されており、モータコストの70%を占めるレアアースに依存しないレアアースフリー モータの開発が国の戦略のひとつとなっています。 このような状況を踏まえ、本プロジェクト研究では、永久磁石を使用しないレアアースフリー モータのひとつであるスイッチトリラクタンスモータ ＳＲモータ の総効率を向上させる技術を開発して、小型ＥＶへ適用するとともに、開発モータをＥＶ以外へも適用することで各種システムの省エネルギー化を図ることを目的としています。 このプロジェクト研究は経産省の戦略的基盤技術高度化支援事業の補完研究として福岡工業大学 明和製作所 糸島市 と共同で行っているもので、現在は開発したSRモータの量産化に向けて、技術完成度向上に取り組んでいます。

総合実験 実習センター内には、 自動車 ロボット研究所 や３Dプリンタや3Dスキャナーなどを整備した デジタルものづくりカフェ 、 プレス加工機における不良レス化 の研究装置も設置されています。 著名な建築家、マイケル グレイヴス氏が手掛けた、デザイン学部のキャンパスは、大型複合施設 リバーウォーク北九州 の中にあります。
