All the bikes sat out on the pine needles overnight. First time in a long time that weren't on a tarp. Often, trucks try cresting Independence to cut miles off of their route. The folks in Aspen don't like that very much . Read the sign. The ascent to Independence pass is mostly straight with only a few switchbacks. Helen and I again.

The ski lift had clocks with four timezones and sensors reading out temperature, pressure, and windspeed at the summit. Our bikes lived in the meeting hall, and we stayed in smaller rooms, divided by gender. Cornfields and mountains. Cropland and wilderness. We're still in a wide river valley. Still in the land of the double trucks. I'm not used to these things. Mail drop means food. And food.

August 16, 2015 at 16:25. Over summer 2015, I volunteered with Bike and Build, an organization that arranges cross-country cycling trips that aim to involve young adults in affordable housing. Over the course of the summer, we bike cross-country, averaging 70 miles a day (the longest day is 116 miles.). Some days instead of cycling, we volunteer with local affordable housing organizations (usually Habitat for Humanity). On build days, we work on the build site from 8-4 or so.
