Njia to Nairobi

Road to nairobi: reflections on world travel, politics, people, and food. Wednesday, June 17. Edward Said would forgive me," or, "Highlights from Syria and Jordan". There's nothing like traveling by the seat of your empty-pocketed pants to restore your faith in humanity. I'm a little concerned about traveling when I'm no longer a student. I love being talked to honestly, not smiled at and babied like a tourist. I worry that becoming a real adult with money will change that. Then you get into the canyon.

Njia to Nairobi: May 2009

http://www.njiatonairobi.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Road to nairobi: reflections on world travel, politics, people, and food. Sunday, May 24. Edward Said would be peeved with me. In Kenya, I enjoyed staring back at the people who stared at me and yelling hello back to anyone who yelled, "Jambo, mzungu! Anyway, enough ranting. I haven't posted pictures in a while, and they usually helps balance out the negatives I talk about. Soooo. here's beautiful Alexandria on my second trip:. Sunday, May 17. Where university politics and world politics meet. Not exactl...

Road to nairobi: reflections on world travel, politics, people, and food. Monday, March 23. Upper Egypt and trains. I'm pushing through my midterms and slowly catching up on the sleep I lost last week. I'm delaying my Cairo discussion because I have oodles of exciting new pictures for you. Midterms this week, but a great field trip this weekend. I'll update when there are exciting things to share! Sunday, March 8. Alexandria and the Mediterranean (Round 1). This weekend's trip had some very high and low ...

Road to nairobi: reflections on world travel, politics, people, and food. Thursday, April 23. Relatively safe return from Euroland. I could probably write about Greece for days, but no one wants to read that. I'm just going to post some scribbled notes from my notebook, accompanied by appropriate excerpts from my 650 pictures. Hah. Ready, set, go! 4/10 : Cairo to Athens. First time seeing Cairo and its smog from the air. hard to believe I breathe that.". Athens smells like cedar and citrus blossoms.".

Road to nairobi: reflections on world travel, politics, people, and food. Wednesday, April 16. Wahenga walisema mtu hujua atokako hajui aendako. And petty suburbanite attitudes again. I think I'll be okay, but I also think you all should know that it's probably going to be weird for me for a while. There's a new Kenyan restaurant in Shawnee, I've heard. We'll go check it out. Naishi, natumaini, najitoleya daima Kenya. Thank you, Eric Wainaina, and asante sana, Kenya. Tutaonana badaye. Monday, April 7.

La Piscina en Chile: April 2009

http://lapiscinaenchile.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 29, 2009. You can't make this stuff up folks. Today I arrived home to find this in my bathroom:. It is a large crystal and most definitely not soap. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS COUNTRY. Monday, April 27, 2009. April 25, 2009. 9:00- Alarm goes off. 9:30- Amanda and I get up and get dressed, still groggy from a late night at the samba club. 10:00- Buy snacks at Líder for our hike in Parque Nacional La Campana. 11:00- Arrive at metro. 11:30- Jono arrives at metro. Stefan is at bus station?

Rush Hour 4: Chile: May 2009

http://aaaenchile.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Rush Hour 4: Chile. Thursday, May 28, 2009. Vegetarian gods, forgive me. I loveeee the steak in Argentina. It is sooo rich. I promise I won’t eat any more meat…(til I go to India cause my family there would probably banish me if I didn’t). I went with 2 good Australian friends, who taught me English- Aussie style. For example, when I asked for a juice box; they cracked up because they thought that ‘juice box’ was a funny name (but it is a box of juice, right? And he says, it matters what kind of comedy y...

La Piscina en Chile: March 2009

http://lapiscinaenchile.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2009. Life's more interesting when it doesn't go as planned. This weekend I went to Pucón, a small town in southern Chile about 10 hrs from Santiago. I left with Amanda and her friends from school, Maria and Chris, although there was a group going from AU too. I didn't sleep as much on the bus ride as I hoped, in part because they showed Raiders. Shaye and I were the only ones who had ridden before, and neither of us for years, but that's no problem, let's go trotting and galloping arou...

La Piscina en Chile: CHI-CHI-CHI LE-LE-LE VIVA CHILEEEEE

http://lapiscinaenchile.blogspot.com/2009/06/chi-chi-chi-le-le-le-viva-chileeeee.html

Thursday, June 11, 2009. CHI-CHI-CHI LE-LE-LE VIVA CHILEEEEE. I'll try not to make this sappy. Today is my last day in Chile! Tomorrow I head to adventures in Buenos Aires. My goals for the week are:. 2 Eat chocolate and steak. 5 Not get dengue fever. 6 Do all of the above with a gaucho. First of all, this question is ridiculous. There is no possible way to summarize my semester (or this country) in one simple phrase. Answer: Chile was great. What are you going to miss from Chile? Staying out until 6am.

Rush Hour 4: Chile: 3400km/ 35 hours

http://aaaenchile.blogspot.com/2009/05/3400km-35-hours.html

Rush Hour 4: Chile. Thursday, May 7, 2009. So I recently returned from an amazing and unforgettable trip to the Atacama Desert in Chile, the driest desert in the world. I can honestly say that it had the most beautiful landscape that I’ve ever. Seen (after India). I am not sure how to describe how impressive the huge mountains of sand and quartz were or how cute the fluffy llamas were, so I am just gonna put some pictures here (courtesy of friends cause my camera ran out of battery early). In Atacama, it...

La Piscina en Chile: June 2009

http://lapiscinaenchile.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 26, 2009. I am home now. There wasn't much culture shock when I got to Chile so there has been minimal reverse culture shock. It's mostly little things, like the reflex to kiss people on the cheek when i say hello and goodbye and to throw toilet paper in the trash. I'm staying in touch with friends in Chile so hopefully I won't forget Spanish. I had a fantastic semester and I was really sad to leave, but hopefully in the future I'll have the opportunity to return. Sunday, June 21, 2009.

La Piscina en Chile: Settling

http://lapiscinaenchile.blogspot.com/2009/05/settling.html

Saturday, May 30, 2009. With only two weeks left in Chile, plus one in Buenos Aires, I feel like I'm finally getting settled and therefore am starting to get really sad to leave. As much as I miss everyone, I've finally found a niche and settled into a routine and now will have to leave it all behind. But that is going abroad for you. Some adventures I've been up to lately. I'm getting a good wine-taste out of this one, with just a hint of fermented grapes. In other news, classes ended this week (! Next ...

Rush Hour 4: Chile: Dar la vuelta

http://aaaenchile.blogspot.com/2009/07/dar-la-vuelta.html

Rush Hour 4: Chile. Tuesday, July 7, 2009. I should be doing anything than writing this right now—packing for Peru, cleaning my incredibly messy room, and saying good-byes. But actually I’d rather do anything but those things right now, so I guess I’ll write instead. Tomorrow I am off to Peru with three Germans and four Spaniards, and hopefully we’ll see Maria and Chris up there. I am so freaking excited for this trip! We will hit up Lake Titicaca and then go to Macchu Picchu and then Lima! I can’t...

Rush Hour 4: Chile: March 2009

http://aaaenchile.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Rush Hour 4: Chile. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Two weeks ago, there was a huge party sponsored by my university called “la semana mechona.” It was basically freshma. This past weekend, there was the Summit of Progressive Leaders right here in Vina del Mar. In attendance were the heads of state of Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Uruguay, UK, Chile (duh), and even Joe Biden! So to the highlight of this post…while our world leaders were busy aimlessly chatting, I packed up with some amigos and went to Pucon! 8217; ...

La Piscina en Chile: February 2009

http://lapiscinaenchile.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 23, 2009. Here I am, safe and sound in Santiago. Sorry I've been incommunicada, but I actually had no way to communicate. The family I'm staying with has wireless internet but the connection was broken this weekend. They only just got it fixed today and I have been DYING (judge me as you will, but it's scary to be unable to contact anyone in a foreign country). Thursday, February 12, 2009. Hello everyone, and welcome to my blog! I'll be posting pictures, of course, and I got one of those...
