Fiddle Style in the Scottish highlands and islands. The modern repertoire is strongly influenced by bagpipe music and by Scottish Gaelic song (particularly in the West Highlands). Many of the beautiful slow airs - or waltz tunes - have melodies which were originally songs. A good knowledge of the language can therefore enhance the interpretation of these lovely tunes. Improvers - Example Tunes. This lovely air is the melody of a popular Gaelic song. The song is a love song and the title means "The boatman". This is a very old tune. Surprisingly it was the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Sussex Regiment - chosen by a Scottish Commanding Officer. Fiddle Groups in Peebles. The music of the Scottish highlands and islands. Learn the traditional way - it's fun and rewarding. Group learning by ear is a great way to learn to play the fiddle. It's good fun and it's possible to quickly build a repertoire of tunes in a relaxed group context. Scottish highland fiddle groups are now running in Peebles. Come along and learn the traditional way. Tuition in the groups is "by ear" and demonstration. The group tutor will help every one to grasp the basic techniques and to find a way of playing which is comfortable for them. Unlike classical violin lessons there is no emphasis on absolutely "correct" technique. The emphasis is on getting a good authentic sound - and most importantly enjoying playing traditional tunes. The title of this tune means "Will you leave with me young maiden? The melody is a bridal song from Tiree which has been adapted as a waltz. If played for dancing it has to be in strict waltz time. The fiddle groups generally alternate with the Nomad Beat 'Celtic Beat' group - so it's possible to go along to both the Celtic Beat group (only 2 for fiddle group pupils) and a fiddle group on alternate Saturdays. This is great for gaining experience of playing with other instruments and broadening the range of tunes you can play. Beginners fiddle group 12 - 1.30pm. Improvers fiddle group 1.30 - 3.00pm. Intermediate fiddle group 3.00 - 5.30pm. Celtic Beat 3 - 5pm.
