The Stars at Noonday: December 2013
http://noondaystars.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
The Stars at Noonday. Books, TV shows, video games, politics, what have you. Tuesday, December 31, 2013. Flowers of the Sea. Unlike many fans of M. R. James, I've never particularly enjoyed "Casting the Runes.". That may seem an odd statement with which to begin a review of Reggie Oliver's new collection, but it is, in fact, the key to my ambivalence about Flowers of the Sea. Make no mistake: this is an excellent set of stories, showing all the skill that ha s. Linked above, I wrote:. The ghostly tale, w...
The Stars at Noonday: The Unbound Man
http://noondaystars.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-unbound-man.html
The Stars at Noonday. Books, TV shows, video games, politics, what have you. Thursday, December 4, 2014. The author supplied a review copy of this book. If the premise of Matt Karlov's first novel sounds broadly familiar, that isn't misleading: this is a novel very much in the tradition of contemporary epic fantasy with a gritty edge. But familiar doesn't have to mean derivative, and The Unbound Man. The themes are perhaps the strongest aspect of The Unbound Man. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
The Stars at Noonday: 2014 reading notes, with some annual favorites
http://noondaystars.blogspot.com/2015/01/2014-reading-notes-with-some-annual.html
The Stars at Noonday. Books, TV shows, video games, politics, what have you. Tuesday, January 6, 2015. 2014 reading notes, with some annual favorites. Rather than picking an arbitrary number or schedule of best books for the year, I'm going to mention a few titles I especially liked, with a focus on those I think could use some extra attention: I really liked the Alice Munro stories I read this year, for example, but I hardly think anyone needs further recommendation of her work. Ash: A Secret History.

Science's Less Accurate Grandmother. Creator Index, A-J. This page lists reviews (or essays) organized by the creators who wrote the books concerned. It also lists the authors of short stories in anthologies, but only if they are specifically mentioned within the review itself. (There are also tags, but this is maybe more navigable. It's also more complete when it comes to books with a lot of contributors, since Blogger limits your tags.). Remembrance of the Daleks. Gone Fishing", Time Signature. Showcas...

Science's Less Accurate Grandmother: Bernice Summerfield Timeline
http://lessaccurategrandmother.blogspot.com/p/bernice-summerfie.html
Science's Less Accurate Grandmother. Yes, it's kinda complicated at times. You try weaving through all. The media. A lot of this is borrowed from the 3rd edition of Lance Parkin and Lars Pearson's Ahistory. But they omit the anthologies, which I find a bit suspect, personally, as it renders some aspects of Benny's ongoing adventures incoherent. Simon Guerrier's Bernice Summerfield: The Inside Story. And many contributions to this thread. On Gallifrey Base [note: link is members-only] were also useful.

The present was a relic of a past I was older than. – Elizabeth Willis. Interesting failures of weird fiction no. 1. “the aquarist” by j.n. allan. January 12, 2015. Fritz Schwimbeck, Dracula. While this may be prevalent now in the world of genre fiction, there are of course numerous instances from the past. A more interesting failure of this variety that I’d like to focus on today is J.N. Allan’s “The Aquarist,” first published in. Aside from an impertinent semi-colon, that is a decent sentence. Is an aq...

The Stars at Noonday. Books, TV shows, video games, politics, what have you. Sunday, December 31, 2017. Books read, 2017. I didn't read very much prose in 2017. Comic books bear a lot of the responsibility. The Nintendo Switch is to blame as well. And finding and moving into a new apartment in the final third of the year didn't make things any easier. But I got back on track in December, and I expect that will continue into the New Year. 1 Dan Chaon, Ill Will. 3 Lemony Snicket, The Reptile Room. 7 Jarett...

Wednesday, November 17, 2010. A Time for thankfulness. I just wanted to take a moment to share a quick story. A story of being thankful! She screamed to Sean who veered left only to be staring directly into the path of an oncoming car. Both doing 50 MPH. Quick action on the part of both drivers and the collision was avoided. There just a few seconds apart, saved two times from catastrophe. Thank you God for the blessing and thank you for allowing me a moment to "count" that blessing! We love you all!
