Then beautiful sunny autumn weather with very little rain allowing the slow development of fully ripe grapes loaded with colour and flavour. The old Grenache on our Winery Block (the backbone of our Eclipse) abandoned the crop almost entirely in order to conserve their resources.whilst the slightly more robust old vines on BJs block set a very small amount of fruit. Our full bodied reds achieved nearly the same spectacular degrees of ripeness and alcohol of the opulently ripe 1997s but with much higher natural balancing acidity due to the cooler conditions. This has given the 1998s more backbone and structure for ageing whilst still delivering great richness and depth of ripe fruit flavour. In this respect the 1998s are more similar in style to 1996, perhaps a little more intense. So we have been blessed with a trio of outstanding quality vintages, with.

Quality good. Lower alcohol levels and lighter, softer wines particularly from Langhorne Creek (Reserve Shiraz and Cabernet). It was a long harvest period, with picking extending over 9 weeks. McLaren Vale was early due to the small crop combining with a warm summer to bring the Grenache to maturity in the first few days of March, around 10 days ahead of average. The result is a typically firm and flavoursome Eclipse.
