First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2: October 2013

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Sunday, 27 October 2013. Somes Sound - Midpoint of build? Been busy lately on the internal fit out and getting to the stage where my boat is beginning to take shape. Some days I seem to make great progress, others you spend hours seemingly getting nowhere. I debated on using some of the Sapele ply as it is such a good quality ply, but the rotary saw pattern isn't quite so authentic at the real board. Smelt We fired up our old lead smelter, and poured a...

I was like a kid waiting to launch my new boat! We decided to have some sea trials on Saturday ahead of the formal launch party on Sunday - which was yesterday. Here she is before heading from our home:-. All loaded up and ready for the road. We rigged the sails and everything seemed to fit! Later on Siobhan ...

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2: February 2014
http://emblasail.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Wednesday, 12 February 2014. Spent quite a while sanding and filling and fairing the lead keel into the hull. Spent a whole day dusting and vacuuming the shop to eliminate as mush dust as possible. Then I hung a polythene tent over the hull to prevent any further dust from landing on it. I applied 3 coats of primer and lightly sanded in between. With Brian's help, I have since sanded down the second coat to a flat uniform finish and am pondering how to...

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2: June 2014
http://emblasail.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Thursday, 26 June 2014. Progress has been slow as I had been waylaid on another project. However, I have been fitting some smaller trim pieces, which are quite time consuming. You can see from the photo opposite that there remains a space underneath the mast step to the keelson - which seems to be as per the plans. However, I read on the glued lapstrake forum that some have allowed the step to sit directly on the keelson, following its contours.

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Sunday, 19 April 2015. Don't sweat the small stuff - Bilge Pump Installation. Don't sweat the small stuff! Well easier said than done when trying to figure out where to drill holes in the bottom of your new boat! Here you can also see where I installed the ships compass on top of the centreboard trunk cap. I elected to position it forward, so that other crew might be able to monitor it. Bilge Pump exit through 3/4" bronze skin fitting. I played back an...

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Saturday, 26 April 2014. Finally I have installed the coamings and I declare to quite pleased with the result! If you look closely you can see where I re-modeled the plank of 10" sapele so that I could get the deck curve out of the smaller stock - otherwise I would have needed a 14" wide board. Even though you can see the different wood grain, the fact that both sides are symmetrical makes it quite attractive - at least to my eyes. Subscribe to my Blog.

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2: December 2014

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Tuesday, 2 December 2014. Some good progress to report since my last post. I installed the centre board having applied several primer coats to the inside of the centre board case and 2 coats of antifoul. Some smaller jobs were finished such as installing the traveller on the transom. Next up was to make new mast tangs for the shrouds. Yannick had already sent me a sail design viewer with his designs for my boat, which were very interesting:-. In this n...

First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2: Milestone Event
http://emblasail.blogspot.com/2014/10/milestone-event.html
First time wooden boat builder - Somes Sound 12 1/2. Sunday, 19 October 2014. I took advantage of the fine weather yesterday to work outside and paint the final coat of antifoul and topside paints. Using a roll and tip method went very quickly, thanks to assistance from Siobhan, and I noticed that the paint dried much quicker than previously when working inside my small garage. I had a call from my sail maker to say he could be here tomorrow to measure the mast bend before making the sails! Your boat loo...
