A Printer's Perspective
Norm's Eye View: January 2010
http://normseyeview.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, 14 January 2010. I bumped into my hippophilic friend Norm last week outside the refreshment tent at Kempton Park racetrack. He was rather mournfully examining the print quality of a Tote ticket before tearing it up. Why the Tote, and not the bookmakers? It's to do with minimising risk" he replied. "Not that it made much difference in this case" he added bitterly, nodding towards a horse that was limping slowly back to the unsaddling enclosure. Its a funny old game, printing, isn't it?
Norm's Eye View: November 2009
http://normseyeview.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 23 November 2009. My festive friend, Norm, was gazing blankly at an Oxford Street window when I came across him. "Shopping early for Christmas? Just pondering over the odd bottle for one or two of the best customers", he grunted. "Don't want to overdo it. I give them a good service all year round. It's just a little personal touch.". I thought finding ways to cut costs was all the rage for companies at the moment", I jokingly added. That seemed to spark Norm off. So how do you deal with it? And d...

Wednesday, 21 October 2009. My pertinacious friend Norm was clucking over a competitor's quotation during our last meeting. "Look at this", he chortled. "He's done it again, underquoted on the job to try and nick more of my business." He nearly choked on his coffee, adding "It's helpful that this customer shows me any competition I might be up against.". I asked him if there was any way to safeguard against such occurrences. "Of course there is", he retorted. "It's the added value you should pay ...It's ...

Wednesday, 26 August 2009. My swinging friend Norm was in an expansive mood the other night. "It's all very well complaining about bigger printers under-quoting you for all the best jobs", he said, "but it often depends on how inventive you're prepared to be". He went on to describe a job he once quoted for a local PR company. Saves on materials as well. Crafty devil, no wonder he got their contract.". It's a funny old game, printing, isn't it? And try it now? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My swinging frie...

The PrintSum Blog: Printing is obviously too difficult!
http://printsum.blogspot.com/2012/03/printing-is-obviously-too-difficult.html
Tuesday, 27 March 2012. Printing is obviously too difficult! Well, I was wrong. (See previous post). As I surmised, printing is self-evidently too difficult for Lord Sugar's apprentices. I didn't see the actual program but I now understand that unlike in the trail I heard, they weren't actually getting their hands dirty themselves. What they had to do was simply get some mugs and t-shirts screenprinted, and then try to flog them to the public. It's a mad world, my masters! 21 December 2012 at 10:13.
The PrintSum Blog: The Green Shoots of Recovery?
http://printsum.blogspot.com/2011/09/green-shoots-of-recovery.html
Tuesday, 6 September 2011. The Green Shoots of Recovery? We've had a relatively quiet summer here, but that's about to change - we're off to exhibit at IPEX South Asia. In Mumbai on 16th September. I say "we" but to my great disappointment I won't be going myself as we have a family wedding for which my attendance has been secured by a 3 line whip. I'll be sorry not to be able to catch up with old friends there. Labels: Ipex South Asia. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The other Printsum blog.

Monday, 23 May 2011. Northprint - post-show reflections. Well, we've been back for a week now, and I've finally managed to clear my desk a bit. Northprint was, despite pessimistic forecasts, actually a very successful show for us. We signed up our first new user within half an hour of the show opening, and from that moment on we didn't look back! Balancing the issues". I've uploaded his powerpoint slides here. Thursday, 5 May 2011. Well, Northprint is just next week. We haven't exhibited at Harrogate...
The PrintSum Blog: The print buyer’s perspective.
http://printsum.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-print-buyers-perspective.html
Thursday, 6 June 2013. The print buyer’s perspective. Have you ever wondered what happens when we stop looking at printing from the traditional printer’s perspective? Try looking at it from the buyer’s side. Quite honestly, the print buyer doesn’t really give a damn about how the job was printed – unless of course he’s intending to photocopy over it. So it’s pretty much irrelevant for your marketing to trumpet about how you’ve just acquired a new XYZ Digital press. To be honest, maybe some could. Is a co...

The PrintSum Blog: December 2010

Thursday, 23 December 2010. I was going through some old files and came across this cartoon Christmas card we (with the help of the late great Keith Gidlow) did for Printpak in the early 1990's. Have a great Christmas, and a prosperous New Year - and don't forget our Christmas Quiz at www.printsum.com/quiz2010.htm. Labels: PrintSum Printpak Christmas Quiz Keith Gidlow. Monday, 16 August 2010. There are a lot of dossers out there! The problem is that life moves on. Believe it or not, if somebody asks me to look at even Version 3 copies of Printpak I have to power up an old PC to do it, as mine is a 64 bit Windows 7 PC. But this user was on Version 2. It's a bit problematic especially when you learn that Microsoft no longer supports MS-DOS at all. So if you're running an MSDOS version of Printpak, why not get in touch. We'll be pleased to advise you.

Thursday, 2 December 2010. My interpretive friend Norm was talking about customer reactions the other day. "It's the indrawn breath I find interesting - noisily, over the teeth", he said. He gave a brief demonstration sounding like a car mechanic. investigating a rattle in a 1962 BMW. Of course it's all psychology really", he continued.
