WP1: Input Data Sources. Work Packet 1 acquired wind speed data using LiDAR, Satellite and Met Mast data. Using the combined expertise of Oldbaum Services Ltd, Garrad Hassan GmbH, DTU Wind, and IWES a data network was established to create the largest dedicated offshore wind dataset within the wind energy sector. Whereas the physical time series is proprietary, the database is being maintained at Oldbaum for scientific research and with an aim of extending the dataset to increase the scientific value.

Work Packet 4 was a multi-faceted work packet looking to apply the work undertaken in Wp1-3 to current issues within the wind industry including forecasting, atlas validation, cost of energy modelling, the final wind atlas, and presentation of multi parameter, multi source large volume, over a large spatial area datasets. Whereas offshore wind is commonly thought of as less complex than onshore wind, the presence of coastal structures and the influence of atmospheric stability raises many questions and hence levels of uncertainty for the offshore developer. WP3 focused at two areas of research, the effect of offshore structures on LiDAR datasets, and the prediction of local shear conditions. Other studies such as an investigation of IEC compliance for the FINO-3 met mast also followed.

NORSEWInD achieved a number of industry firsts throughout the programme. Objectives achieved during NORSEWInD included developing offshore wind atlases for the Baltic Irish and North Seas with a database and the development of an advanced short term forecasting system. Other key objectives are:. Systematic testing and accreditation process for LiDAR systems. The creation of the largest LiDAR network for wind speed data acquisitions. The creation of one of the largest satellite SAR repositories for wind.
