Northeast Florida Gardener

Tuesday, March 25, 2014. An apple tree grows in Florida. One of my five new apple trees. This one is called Cinnamon Spice. While I am certainly not the first to grow an apple tree (or five) in Florida, I can guarantee that I am am one of the first, if not the first, to grow the varieties I have planted. I have been wanting to plant some apples for quite a few years. After much. Research, I ordered the five you see below from Trees of Antiquity. On another note, we recently cleared/bush mowed some of our...

Northeast Florida Gardener: November 2011

http://northeastfloridagardener.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Today I harvested some of the romaine and deer tongue lettuces from the garden. Didn't get any photos, but did have it on a turkey sandwich for lunch, and a grilled chicken wrap for dinner. It is an amazing feeling to be able to walk out back and bring in a large bowl of lettuce you grew yourself. I can't wait for spring! Posted by Tom Barrett. Thursday, November 3, 2011. In case you have not yet seen it, here is a link to the newly released " Back to Eden.

Northeast Florida Gardener: June 2012

http://northeastfloridagardener.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 8, 2012. Last post I told you about a mystery tomato plant that came up in the garden. Since that post, I have picked probably 130 - 150 tomatoes off that one plant. Below is a photo. The concrete block is for size reference. I am amazed at the production of this bush, and am saving seed in the hope to at least get this good of result or better next year. The heads shown above are from just one plant, so if all goes well, I should have an abundance of seed. Posted by Tom Barrett.

Northeast Florida Gardener: August 2011

http://northeastfloridagardener.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 30, 2011. My father in law is scaling his gardening down a bit and redoing his compost bin. As a result, he will have quite a few concrete blocks left over that he is giving me. Now I will be able to construct a bin where all the stuff I throw in will stay in there instead of rolling off the hill! I picked up a good read from the local library that I think is worth sharing. " A Short History of the Honey Bee. Posted by Tom Barrett. Saturday, August 13, 2011. Will keep you updated. All con...

Cody's Plants: Summer Showers

http://www.codysplants.com/2016/08/summer-showers.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Thursday, August 11, 2016. The past few weeks have been nothing but rain and more rain. Sometimes it's a downpour while other times it's just a constant drizzle. The main problem with all this rain is that the sun barely comes out to dry it up. I haven't watered anything in over a week and I'm afraid my seedlings aren't growing very much without any sunlight. Email - cody@codysplants.com. From around the yard:. Yellow and Purple Coneflower seedlings.

Cody's Plants: Angel Trumpets Everywhere!

http://www.codysplants.com/2016/06/angel-trumpets-everywhere.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Friday, June 17, 2016. My yard is being taken over by Angel Trumpets (Brugmansia). When we moved in a year ago, these were little sticks in the ground with some leaves. They grew large during the fall but died back to dead sticks in the winter and then I cut all the sticks back to the ground. Once Spring came, these Trumpets started their crazy growing cycle. Here's a picture of how big the plants were when we moved in:. Almost as tall at our screen porch.

Cody's Plants: June Garden Update - It's Hot Outside...

http://www.codysplants.com/2016/06/june-garden-update-its-hot-outside.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Thursday, June 9, 2016. June Garden Update - It's Hot Outside. It's been a busy couple weeks with school getting out and some traveling. We had to deal with Tropical Storm Colin's flash flooding and now we are back to 90 degree heat. The following pictures are what's going on around our yard. Tomatoes growing everywhere. The seeds came from overripe fruit that I sliced and placed in the garden. I thinned out the seedlings once they began growing. I love s...

Cody's Plants: March 2016

http://www.codysplants.com/2016_03_01_archive.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Pollen Rain = Yellow Puddles. This past week has been nothing but pollen and rain. It rained non-stop for three straight days and now the pollen picked right back up covering everything. My larger Angel Trumpets (Brugmansia) cuttings are growing real well. Tonight I trimmed off the dead parts of the cuttings so that they have room to grow tall. It's amazing how easy these things grow. Two new cuttings starting to grow leaves.

Cody's Plants: July 2016

http://www.codysplants.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Thursday, July 21, 2016. With the heat and afternoon thunderstorms, it's hard to get outside and stay long enough to get some work done. I have slowly been working on our front rose gardens and adding new roses by cuttings. I also planted a yellow hibiscus and large flower Luna hibiscus right by a gutter. they are doing great! My organized seed starting bench. Organizing seeds in larger containers. Look how many are on two dried flowers! Flower Friday: So...

Cody's Plants: May 2016

http://www.codysplants.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Tuesday, May 24, 2016. Do we have Florida Native Milkweed? Which species of milkweed do we have? Here are some pictures of the milkweed growing in our garden:. Older picture showing off the leaves. Notice the seed pods. My first thought was that these plants were Asclepias tuberosa. Or commonly called butterfly milkweed, but after some research I found that the flowers and leaves were very different. And we recently received a butterfly packet in the mail...

http://www.codysplants.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Thursday, April 28, 2016. Flowers and Plant Stakes. A lot has happened since my last post. I just had to have a red flowering Tropical Sage (Salvia coccinea). After getting the Coral Nymph cultivar a week before. I ended up picking up this Sage at Tallahassee Nurseries. Now our rain/flower garden area has lots of different colors! Morning picture with all the colors! These Amaryllis blooms are almost too heavy for the stem. These stakes came out great!

A blog about backyard gardening in North Florida. Thursday, June 30, 2016. Wet and Hot as Firespike. These plants bloom in late summer and fall with tall red spike flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. I plan on growing these all along our back porch and selling the cuttings once they grow larger. Here are many firespike, red maple, and spiderwort. This is a picture of a firespike from last fall. They are a lot taller this year! Marlin enjoying the Firespike blooms last fall. Sharon's Florid...
