Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist: Nature Note #192: Snacking and Entering
http://northeastnaturenote.blogspot.com/2017/01/nature-note-192-snacking-and-entering.html
Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist. Wednesday, January 4, 2017. Nature Note #192: Snacking and Entering. Grey squirrel, but not T.S. This can certainly become a problem with animals like deer, pigeons, and cockroaches, but one creature in particular is especially skilled at outwitting humans into getting what they want. I am, of course, talking about squirrels. Specifically, grey squirrels ( Sciurus carolinensis. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Nature Note #195: Snow Birds.
Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist: April 2016
http://northeastnaturenote.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html
Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist. Saturday, April 30, 2016. Nature Note #162: Greetings from Marcellus. The sun is slowly rising over the nearby hills before I leave for work. Outside on the street, cars drive by regularly, but with little fanfare. In the spruces by our new apartment window, starlings jeer and chatter, while a squirrel hops towards a leafless tree, seeking shelter in its branches. As we continue to settle into this lovely little New York town, dispatches will occu...

http://northeastnaturenote.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html
Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist. Saturday, November 19, 2016. Nature Note #187: Devil Down Head. Here in the northeast, we have two species of nuthatches; the white-breasted ( Sitta carolinensis. And the red-breasted ( S. canadensis. They seem to have taken lessons of the squirrel which runs down the tree headfirst,. Stretching out his hind feet backward and so clinging to the bark with his claws as he goes down;. Nimbly down the tree head first - something that other birds hardl...

Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist: January 2017
http://northeastnaturenote.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html
Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist. Monday, January 23, 2017. Nature Note #195: Snow Birds. As if on cue, a small flock of birds appeared below the feeder, scouring the dropped sunflower seeds for unopened morsels that clumsier birds had spilled while poking about for the next seed. Graphite above with small, dark eyes, a white belly, and neat white edges to their tails, they were easy to identify. The juncos had arrived. Lone snow bird. Photo by me. They fed quietly together, flick...

Bayberrying – Field and Footnotes
https://fieldandfootnotes.wordpress.com/2016/12/11/bayberry-candles
Two birds in the woods. December 11, 2016. December 12, 2016. With help, I gathered a scant pound of berries, leaving fruit for other foragers. Today the principal foragers of bayberries are yellow-rumped warblers, whose unusual ability to digest lipids in the berries’ coating allows them to overwinter where others of their genus cannot. Indeed, the eastern subspecies of the yellow-rumped warbler is known as the myrtle warbler, after its reliance on the fruit. Northern bayberry (Myrica pennsylvanica).

Two birds in the woods. Pink Feet and Red Heads. January 10, 2017. January 17, 2017. The pink-footed goose is a compact goose with grey-brown plumage, a short pink beak, and as the name might imply, pink feet. Their breeding territory is far to the north in Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard, and they. 8220;Where are we going? 8221; they asked. 8220;To Valley Stream! To a town park! New Year, New Birds – Field and Footnotes
https://fieldandfootnotes.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/new-year-new-birds
Two birds in the woods. New Year, New Birds. January 7, 2017. January 7, 2017. My first bird of the new year was a blue jay, hunkered down on a fence post in my parents’ backyard. Common, but every bird is a new bird on January 1! Shadow play on Hobart Beach. This past year was a hard one, and I hope that 2017 brings some more color to my life. If it comes in the form of warblers and woodpeckers, I’ll take it. I saw 167 species. So in no particular order…. Bird more regularly throughout the year. Staring...
Spring and all – sparrowsign
https://sparrowsign.wordpress.com/2015/03/09/spring-and-all
Old sam peabody, peabody, peabody. March 9, 2015. Elizabeth and I came across this abandoned oriole nest at Croton Point Park this weekend while on the hunt for Bald Eagles (we saw six). It was dangling over the road by the park office, just barely hanging on to its branch or so it seemed at first, because what a feat of engineering! How hardy it must be to have survived this winter! Spring cannot come soon enough. Away, ice! Give me mud and petrichor. This entry was posted in Uncategorized.
Superb Owl Sunday at Floyd Bennett Field – sparrowsign

Old sam peabody, peabody, peabody. February 3, 2015. Superb Owl Sunday at Floyd Bennett Field. 8220;Elizabeth, do you want to go on a bird walk in the dead of winter to an abandoned airfield? Please, please, please? It should come as no surprise to you that she said yes. 8220;Have a Nice Day! Needless to say, we did not see any owls. Once we got our fill of flickers (and resigned ourselves to the reality that this would be Superb Owl Sunday in name only), we headed to the boat ramp overlooking Jamaica Ba...

Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist
Nature Note: The Adventures of a Northeastern Naturalist. Monday, January 9, 2017. Nature Note #194: Nemesis Birds. For my last memory of 2016, I want to talk about nemesis birds. But, just what is a nemesis bird? Let's start with simple definition:. A bird that time and time again successfully evades discovery or notice due to their cryptic nature and infrequent appearances to an area that drives a birder to near madness in order to discover it. Brown creeper ( Certhia americana. I couldn't believe it&#...
