Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland
northern rustic: March 2015
http://northernrustic.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland (mainly Filey Bird Observatory). Nature writing and projects. The Birds of SNR. Sunday, March 29, 2015. The relentless strong westerlies and low pressure systems look set to continue for some days, so to tide things over a little longer, a few more signs of a stuttering spring: Brown Hare at our Old Tip reserve, a Reed Bunting coming into breeding plumage, and a Wren carrying nest material, both at the Dams. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Tuesday, March 24, 2015.

Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland (mainly Filey Bird Observatory). Nature writing and projects. The Birds of SNR. Thursday, January 22, 2015. A Good Year for the Rosies. Year-listing in Filey for Coquet island's Roseate Terns. Migrate back from the African coast every spring to breed on the tiny Coquet Island off the Northumbrian coast – the only UK breeding colony, with just 60-80 pairs – making Rosies. On behalf of Filey Bird Observatory. But I'm aiming for between 160 and 180 species. If...

Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland (mainly Filey Bird Observatory). Nature writing and projects. The Birds of SNR. Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Flamborough, late November 2014. Male Stonechat, Thornwick. Large flocks of Woodpigeons on the move. Spot the well-camouflaged Turnstones. Lovely evening light on South Landing beach. And many tame Rock Pipits for company. Sundown (taken with phone). Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Concrete proof that Grey Phalaropes have legs. Well, not half bad at least...

Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland (mainly Filey Bird Observatory). Nature writing and projects. The Birds of SNR. Sunday, August 2, 2015. With heavy showers forecast (and arriving on cue), comrade Dan and I decided on a stakeout of our local wetlands - the Dams and East Lea - in the hope of grounded waders by mid-pm; not much joy except for Green and Common Sandpipers, a few Lapwings, Curlew and Snipe, but a very smart Hobby at East Lea more than compensated. Lucky enough to spend plenty of my ...
northern rustic: Filey, 1st - 15th May 2015
http://northernrustic.blogspot.com/2015/05/filey-1st-15th-may-2015.html
Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland (mainly Filey Bird Observatory). Nature writing and projects. The Birds of SNR. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Filey, 1st - 15th May 2015. Grey Seal pup on the Brigg. Plenty of time in the field, and plenty of entertainment (it is spring after all), but unremarkable just about covers it from an ornithological perspective. It's often a strangely tricky period, despite the time of the season and the possibilities it offers (see the last two years equivalent posts here.

cliftonbirding: Breeding Bee-eaters
http://cliftonbirding.blogspot.com/2015/08/breeding-bee-eaters.html
Tuesday, 4 August 2015. At the back end of last week news was released of some Bee-eaters. Breeding in a quarry at Brampton near Carlisle, two pairs plus a couple of helpers apparently, I was out with Pete Watson on Sunday and we thought we’d go have a look, the weather forecast wasn’t brilliant but at least it wasn’t raining when we got there, just one nest site on view and at least one bird showed regularly if a little distantly throughout the morning, also a Wheatear. Was viewable from Lower Hide.
Tower 42 birds: Day Seven - 27th May 2010
http://tower42birds.blogspot.com/2010/08/day-seven-27th-may-2010.html
Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Day Seven - 27th May 2010. And, of course, Peregrines. Who frankly make it all worthwhile on their own. Somewhat reminiscent of a poor seawatch but with close-up plunging Gannets for compensation. Also recorded - a House Martin. And an extraordinarily high Grey Heron. Heading SSW. Check back soon for a summary of sightings throughout the spring. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Day One - 7th April 2010. Day Two - 13th April 2010 - Bingo. Natural World from an unnatural world.

cliftonbirding: July 2014
http://cliftonbirding.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Monday, 28 July 2014. Sweet Raptors and a second chance tern in Teesside. With nothing much around at the moment within striking distance I had been thinking of trying for the Honey Buzzards. At Wykeham again this last weekend however with a White Rumped Sandpiper. Showing well at Cresswell Ponds in Northumberland and another White Winged Black Tern. Had gone although the Tern. Haven’t been showing very well this year, it was very slow, a couple of Kestrels. And a few common Buzzards. I hung around for a...
cliftonbirding: Showy Sab's and the disappearing acts
http://cliftonbirding.blogspot.com/2015/08/showy-sabs-and-disappearing-acts.html
Sunday, 9 August 2015. Showy Sab's and the disappearing acts. Out with Mark today and we went over to Pennington Flash in Greater Manchester where an adult Sabine’s Gull. Had been found in the week and had been showing well, it was still present this morning and still showing well, a great bird to try out my new camera gear with. After a good session with it we moved on and up to Preston where a first summer Ring Billed Gull. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). In search of Storks. Spotting a rare Crake.
cliftonbirding: April 2015
http://cliftonbirding.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Monday, 27 April 2015. Grizzlies and a day roosting Heron. I was out with Pete Watson today and we decided to do a repeat of the trip we did this time last year to Twyford Woods in South Lincs for the Grizzled Skippers. Then back to Whisby Country Park for Nightingales. Armed with a bit more info on the Butterflies. Into action, they weren’t easy though, very quick and easily lost but we eventually got good views of at least two, we also had the bonus of a Dingy Skipper. Of the year, several Buzzards.

Latterly mostly about travel. Friday, 24 July 2015. So what's been going on? Obviously there is never a dull moment at Chateau L, but there's not a lot to tell. This week however has been punctuated by two momentous twitches. Well, one momentous, one semi-pleasing. The first was a Green Sandpiper. On the deck. Although it was my 5th Green Sand. Please tell us it is not so? And if it is, please make sure to release some extra-special waders (or ducks) from your magic satchel before you go! If an instituti...

Mark James Pearson's adventures in Birdland. Champions of the Flyway! Nature writing and projects. Friday, April 6, 2018. Israel, March '18 (3) - Palestine Sunbirds and Palestine Sunbirders. They may be pretty much everywhere in Israel, but what absolute beauties Palestine Sunbirds. Are Even in low light (as in these pretty grainy shots) their iridescence shines; as did our comrades the Palestine Sunbirders. Noam, Saed and especially Ikram (with Rich and I, below) - an inspiration to all. 8216; / ‘.

Northern Rustication
It's the Little Things. Memories, things and bits that have been making me happy lately. Thinking of how soon I'll be working at the vineyard again, finding little wonders like dew covered spiderwebs or nests full of robins eggs or birds i never knew existed. The nights spent writing at my desk lit only by white icicle lights and flickering candles, accompanied by a soundtrack of my purring cat and the scratch of my ink pen running across the page. Looking out my window this morning and seeing water run ...
