The dogs do all the work around here. They hold the sheep while net fence is moved, move the sheep to the new paddocks, load the trailer, and put them in pens and through the chutes for us to worm. Sometimes I need to sort out and remove certain sheep while they are pastured off the farm. Despite no handling equipment I can still sort out individual animals with a good dog. Cato worked through years of ignorant training and handling as I gradually learned what he already knew.

The flock is mostly Cheviot crosses, some Tunis and Dorset. A couple Scottish Blackface ewes add some variety. Our breeding goals are hardiness, good mothering, body type and prolificacy. The first two are mandatory. Sheep that need special considerations are culled. There's no time for sheep that don't thrive or are poor mothers. North Face Farm © 2009-2016 Maria Amodei.

North Face Farm Blog. Thursday, June 5, 2014. Some people came home from work and went shopping today. Some caught up on chores, then sat to watch TV. Me, I sprinted through chores to snare some time to work dogs. Then I hitched the trailer and took sheep and dogs to a large hay field to work. The new growth is just beginning after the first cutting, clover filling between the cut stalks, restoring the rich green. Late evening sun burnishes the domes of the clouds with color like a ripe peach.
