Alex Blagona: Are we following the script?
http://alexblagona.blogspot.com/2009/04/are-we-following-script.html
Are we following the script? The BBC News website. Was reporting quite heavily on Sunday claims made by an undercover reporter regarding advice given by former MFL Chief Examiner Terry Murray. The undercover 'teacher', and Nick Gibb. The Shadow Schools' Minister, who appeared as a guest on Donal McIntyre's programme. On BBC Radio 5, which ran with this as the top story. To any other subject on the curriculum. In her post on a very lively TES MFL forum. Posted by Alex Blagona. Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

Alex Blagona: A desire to lead?
http://alexblagona.blogspot.com/2010/09/desire-to-lead.html
A desire to lead? After nearly a year, I am reaching the end of my senior management - 'Leadership Pathways' training programme. I completed the Leading from the Middle programme a couple of years ago and found it a really valuable experience, which really opened my eyes as to how I would do things differently in a number of given situations. What I've discovered on this course has opened my eyes just a tiny amount to what it takes to move into positions of leadership in a school. Things that I've no...

Alex Blagona: Exam boards still don't pass the test...
http://alexblagona.blogspot.com/2011/12/exam-boards-still-dont-pass-test.html
Exam boards still don't pass the test. The recent allegations regarding examiners 'giving away' key information has provoked another outpouring of annoyance from many in the teaching profession. I seriously consider the examination system in this country to be discredited, mostly unaccountable, and more interested in making profit than trying to get the best out of our students, and upholding standards. For one, does the country need so many different exam boards? Posted by Alex Blagona. Therefore I do n...

Alex Blagona: Is the 'reality' as bad as that?
http://alexblagona.blogspot.com/2011/11/is-reality-as-bad-as-that.html
Is the 'reality' as bad as that? Over the weekend I was drawn by Chris Harte's post on twitter to John Bald's post. On ConservativeHome.com in which he draws comparisons between Passmores Academy in Harlow and the Mossbourne Academy in Hackney. Frankly, I was stunned by both the tone of the article and the level of ignorance it portrays regarding modern comprehensive schooling. I'm not one to jump to knee-jerk reactions, so have waited a while to formulate a response. This is compared to 0% of pupils at ...

Alex Blagona: Talking ICT and MFL at UEA
http://alexblagona.blogspot.com/2010/01/talking-ict-and-mfl-at-uea.html
Talking ICT and MFL at UEA. I was delighted to be invited back to the School of Education and Lifelong Learning. At the University of East Anglia. In Norwich today. In the 90s I was a student there myself, and have nothing but fantastic memories of the place, and consequently I always look forward to going back. It's changed a lot since I was there, but still possesses the same friendly atmosphere and vibe which made it such a great place to study. Photo by Leo Reynolds. Posted by Alex Blagona. I never r...

Alex Blagona: Exchange and Smart?
http://alexblagona.blogspot.com/2009/10/exchange-and-smart.html
I've been teaching 12 years, and in that time I've been on countless foreign trips, visits and exchanges. Viewed all too often by my non-MFL colleagues as 'jollies' or holidays, these trips, while priceless in the experiences that can be gained by the students, as any teacher who has run such a trip will testify, can be a nightmare in terms of stress and worry. I'm also aware that we're not allowed to give paracetemol to students with headaches, or apply plasters to children for fear of 'assulting' them.
