north lakes volunteer hub: November 2012
http://northlakesvols.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
North Lakes Volunteer Hub Blog. Friday, 2 November 2012. Beware of witches, ghosts, boggerts and other nasties in Ennerdale! On Halloween three plucky staff and two volunteers braved the weather and anything else that might be about to attack them to undertake a spooky story walk in Wild Ennerdale. Earlier in the year I had attended a story-telling workshop. (See my post for 3rd of April) I was therefore really pleased to get a chance to try my new skills out on some people other than the family!
north lakes volunteer hub: February 2012
http://northlakesvols.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
North Lakes Volunteer Hub Blog. Tuesday, 7 February 2012. WIND, RAIN, HAIL. Nothing stops the hardy National Trust volunteers (except a brief pause for coffee, pies and cake). If you have recently walked the path between Syke Farm and Buttermere shore you may have noticed some changes to it. The path above the rock step has been improved and the ditch is draining better. This is the work of a small group of NT volunteers. Posted by North Lakes Volunteers. Wednesday, 1 February 2012. WIND, RAIN, HAIL.

North Lakes Volunteer Hub Blog. Wednesday, 23 May 2012. Who Pays the Ferry Man? Well it`s like this, the blog title is a story related to us by the master of story telling Ranger Supervisor Paul. More of this later. It started as the normal Thursday volunteer day for David, Christine, Phil, Jim and Theo. The task was to put the NT boats back onto Crummock Water, Loweswater and Buttermere lakes. It should have been a straight forward task but as with some things today was not going to go smoothly! Once we...

NT North Lakes: Beavering Away
http://ntnorthlakes.blogspot.com/2013/10/beavering-away.html
Tuesday, 8 October 2013. From time to time what seems to be a simple task, becomes a bit of a challenge for Ranger Dan and myself, not such a bad thing though as it allows us to be slightly imaginative and change how we do things, also makes life more interesting I reckon! A piece of footpath maintenance at Dunthwaite was a case in point, easy enough job but access to the site is a major problem, so what do we do? Well we just use what's already there! Filling the gaps in stream banks, beaver style!
NT North Lakes: Whiteless breast
http://ntnorthlakes.blogspot.com/2014/02/whiteless-breast.html
Friday, 21 February 2014. Buttermere is one of the few places left in the North Lakes with some grassy untouched paths. pre-emptive work can help keep the paths natural. Pidgeon holes" a line of circular bare patches can occur on grassy slopes when a large numbers of walkers follow the same line up a hill. Although these foot holes make the hill easier to climb, they quickly join together into a groove that water runs down creating a gully. The willow is locally sourced from a basket weaver,.
NT North Lakes: A Mixed Bag!!
http://ntnorthlakes.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-mixed-bag.html
Friday, 26 July 2013. Some of our visitors are more of a challenge than others, most folks are content to visit, enjoy our landscape, perhaps take in some spiritual enlightenment and leave refreshed, a minority of others however seem intent on trashing the place entirely, this past week we’ve been spending most mornings removing rubbish from lakeside fields, broken bottles, cans, barbeques, deckchairs, lots of underpants and general debris! A small amount of the daily collection. He's not terrifed, honest.
NT North Lakes: Something nice that made us smile
http://ntnorthlakes.blogspot.com/2013/11/something-nice-that-made-us-smile.html
Saturday, 30 November 2013. Something nice that made us smile. Most of our blog posts deal with the day to day tasks involved in keeping our countryside in tip top condition, occasionally we have some fun and occasionally we even touch some hearts! A few weeks ago we took some children from Ennerdale Primary School on a very wet and windy hike up. Thanks kids, let's do it again real soon! Getting outdoors and closer to nature. Ranger Roy National Trust: News Flash
http://northlakes.blogspot.com/2015/07/news-flash.html
Ranger Roy National Trust. Saturday, 4 July 2015. In Stoneycroft Ghyll in the Newlands Valley, we have moved the rock that is known as legbreaker rock . The primary reason for doing this is to stop further erosion caused by groups leaving the ghyll to go around the rock and the water slide. This will enable groups to stay within the water-course rather than creating erosion around it. This is a win/win situation where we minimise erosion and also create a more enjoyable experience for ghyll scramblers.

Ranger Roy National Trust. Friday, 26 June 2015. From boardwalk to wild flower meadow. It’s also great to see some of the things I see during my working days. One recent morning I saw mother and daughter roe deer. If you are alert or will sit quietly and wait patiently, you will be surprised what you can see. I was able to take photographs of these and walk away quietly and they didn’t move. Really nice to see. Links to this post. Thursday, 18 June 2015. Daisy’s been to play dates on Derwent Island...

http://northlakes.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Ranger Roy National Trust. Friday, 27 February 2015. The fund-raiser for my area is Liz Guest and she visited for a day recently to take a look at what projects might be appealing to sponsors. Elsewhere in the week, routine maintenance continued and I spent a day with a chainsaw cutting back branches that were overhanging a fence line on Crow Park. There’s always plenty of work like that to be done. Daisy here: Roy always makes me stay well back when he is using a chainsaw. Links to this post. And a beau...
Ranger Roy National Trust: December 2014
http://northlakes.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Ranger Roy National Trust. Friday, 19 December 2014. Once again, as we approach the end of another year, I have been reflecting on what has been achieved and once again I realise just how much has depended on the fantastic volunteers who work with me. Some of it has been stewardship in that we have worked to protect the best features of the area. I think of the work done to maintain good surfaces on the paths so that there is good access for as many people as possible. Links to this post. So my volunteer...

The Cranial Cruciate Ligament
Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) Rupture is the leading cause of hind limb lameness in dogs. The dog CCL is the equivalent of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in people. The CCL is a fibrous band that extends from the femur (the bone above the knee) to the tibia (the bone below the knee) in a back-to-front orientation, functioning to prevent the tibia from thrusting forward.

North Lakes Volunteer Hub Blog. Tuesday, 26 February 2013. Ready, steady, grow! It's so much nicer being out of doors if the sun is out too! Wordsworth House and Garden is getting ready for opening and that includes getting ready for the return of the hens. A great many barrow loads of wood chippings were transported to the hen run by gardener Amanda and three of the garden volunteers. It was a beautiful bright day and although it started cold we soon warmed up! Posted by North Lakes Volunteers. We hope ...
