Amble Harbour - Photos of Harbours on the Northumberland Coast
http://www.northumberlandcam.com/amble.htm
The Port of Amble is situated at the mouth of the River Coquet and was developed in the 19th century to export coal from nearby collieries at Broomhill and Radcliffe. Amble had a boat building business where a variety of craft including some concrete hull boats were built. A small fishing fleet still operates from Amble Harbour. A large marina was built in the 1980's which is now used by many pleasure craft. Boat trips around nearby Coquet Island are available in fine weather during the tourist season.
Craster Harbour - Photos of Harbours on the Northumberland Coast
http://www.northumberlandcam.com/craster.htm
Craster is a small fishing harbour and a very popular tourist destination, due partly to it's proximity to Dunstanburgh Castle. The village is known for the world famous Craster Kippers which are still smoked in the traditional manner by a local company. There is evidence of a previous trade at Craster by the curious construction at the harbour entrance. This used to be a loading facility for stone quarried locally - ships would moor at the harbour entrance to be loaded. Craster Harbour - various views.
Seahouses Harbour - Photos of Harbours on the Northumberland Coast
http://www.northumberlandcam.com/seahouses.htm
Seahouses is a busy fishing and leisure harbour and a very popular tourist destination. It is the largest harbour in Northumberland that is not located in the entrance to a River. Fishing has been the main trade here for centuries but like most British fishing ports this has declined in recent years. There was once a trade in lime, as in other harbours on the Northumberland coast and the Kilns have been preserved in the harbour as our first photo below shows. Two views looking from the harbour entrance.
Beadnell Harbour - Photos of Harbours on the Northumberland Coast
http://www.northumberlandcam.com/beadnell.htm
Beadnell's small harbour is the only harbour on the East Coast of England whose entrance faces west. Today it is used by a few small fishing boats, but the lime kilns seen in the first picture below, are a clue to previous trade in the 18th century. Grain was also transported from Beadnell and the harbour was also used by Smugglers in the 18th century. Beadnell Harbour and lime kilns. View of beadnell Harbour from the top of the lime kilns. Blyth Harbour, Port of Blyth - Photos of Harbours on the Northumberland Coast
http://www.northumberlandcam.com/blyth.htm
Blyth is Northumberland's biggest port, handling bulk cargos of aluminium ore, wind turbines, coal, recycling materials and other general cargo. A new cargo dock (Battleship Wharf ) with a rail link has been built on the site of the old ship breakers yard. There is a large marina in the South Harbour and a small fishing fleet still operates from the port. Along with shipbuilding came ship dismantling and many ships made their final voyage to Hughes Bolkow shipbreakers at North Blyth. The Power Station on...
