10 years ago the North Yell Development Council began investigations into the potential for a small wind farm in North Yell. In April 2011 the Shetland Islands Council approved planning permission to erect 5 wind turbines at Garth, known locally as 'Da Gert'. Each turbine will produce 850-900kW and will be no more than 70 meters high to the tip of the blades. If the application for a grid connection is successful, we aim to have the wind farm complete by the end of 2015.

Cullivoe Harbour Industrial Estate. In 2003 the North Yell Development Council officially opened the Cullivoe Harbour Industrial Estate, as a facility for local businesses. Complimenting the Cullivoe Harbour. And making North Yell the industrial hub of the North Isles. The Industrial Estate was fully subscribed on opening day, and the tenant business are all thriving and employing a significant number of full-time and part-time staff.
