A letter from me to my straight teaching colleagues in staffrooms around the country. – Paul’s Story | Not a Second-Class Teacher

Not a Second-Class Teacher. LGBT Teachers' Blog. Skip to primary content. Why we need this blog. A letter from me to my straight teaching colleagues in staffrooms around the country. Paul’s Story. March 8, 2015. There is much talk about how LGBT staff members might find maneuvering staffroom conversations a kin to a delicate tight rope balance, especially in certain schools. But what about if you don’t find this? That’s what most LGBT people want right? What if you have that, like I do? 8221; I want to s...

Not a Second-Class Teacher. LGBT Teachers' Blog. Skip to primary content. Why we need this blog. Hiding in the Classroom – John’s Story. October 6, 2014. Hiding in the Classroom. It was only on retiring from teaching just over nine years ago that I got the courage to attend a meeting of the LGBT Teachers’ Group (and of course the group had only been recently formed then). While a number of my colleagues knew that I was gay, I couldn’t describe myself as being out! I leave that to the reader’s imagination.

Go Berserk! |
https://angelarickard.wordpress.com/2014/02/07/go-berserk
Why I am voting YES on May 22nd →. I started this blog as a way to help me recall, reflect and share the ideas that I would encounter on the US Embassy Ed Tech exchange. When I began I’d been thinking in terms of the people, places and projects that I would encounter in the USA. So to redefine the purpose of this blog then, and to keep it going over the next few weeks, I would like to share some of the insights I have had from those conversations. Tells the story of the development of Go Berserk! The imp...

Molly and Ned |

US Embassy Edtech Programme 2014. National Academy of Sciences →. The first meeting of the US Ed Tech exchange programme. Was scheduled as a formal meeting in the State Department. For it we would need to show our passports to gain entry, to dress well and the schedule noted that the ‘speaker’ would be Amy Storrow. So it was reasonable perhaps that our collective assumption was that we’d hear a welcome speech or formal presentation about our programme. Glad to have disrupted that particular chestnut too!

Molly and Ned →. US Embassy Edtech Programme 2014. This Saturday I head to the United States to participate in a two week study trip with a number of other participants from Ireland and Northern Ireland. I have decided to dust off this blog address to use as a journal of the trip. The programme is focused on Science and Technology and on building relationships between Irish, Northern Irish and US entrepreneurs and educators. It is supported by the US State Department. January 13, 2014 at 13:29. Leave a R...

Mot du jour: Homago →. National Academy of Sciences. Second on the schedule for Monday morning was a visit to the National Academy of Sciences. Established in 1863 by an Act of Congress that was signed by Abraham Lincoln, the NAS is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars, 500 hundred of whom are Nobel laureates! The Academy’s mission. Following an overview of the NAS given by Jay Labov. We heard a short presentation from Margaret Hilton. The study’s initial hypothesis was that games had ...

Leaving New England →. No excuses, just solutions. No excuses, just solutions is the motto of McKinley Technological High School. The current principal, Dr. Louise Jones, continues to promote STEM and good results continue to be achieved by the students. It seems Public Schools in DC (and presumably this is true across the United States) are not known for their high academic achievement. In addition to the technical stuff for Cyber Security they were reading America the Vulnerable. In another lesson a sm...

No excuses, just solutions. Ninja in Boston →. I’m drafting this blog post on the train as we travel from Boston to New York. The weather, which had been quite mild during our first week in DC and Seattle, has taken a turn for the sub-zero and the landscape outside is Christmas card beautiful. It remains to be seen of course whether it will seem so lovely when we get to NYC! Some of our meetings may not go ahead due to the uncertainty about the weather inland to the north-west. In a community that is und...

Why I am voting YES on May 22nd. It will come as no surprise that I know a lot of teachers! Some readers will be even less surprised (some, more so perhaps? That many teachers I know are lesbian or gay. The bit that will surprise no one at all, I think, is that of the many lesbian and gay teachers I know, very few feel they can be out at school. Those who are out at school may not have chosen to be and are (or think they are) only out to their colleagues. I think many lesbian and gay teachers only. I hea...

April 30, 2015. June 14, 2015. It’s been almost a year that I wrote on my blog and I have been thinking for a month now to start writing about my travels in Ireland. So, when I was finally done with my semester and had all the time in the world the thought of writing again struck me. And the article can viewed here. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Our other official meeting of last Monday was with the Consulate General of Ireland in Boston. We met the Consul General Breandán Ó Caollaí and colleagues and were treated to a warm Irish welcome in 535 Boylston Street. (The Consulate is located very close to the finish line of the Boston Marathon). The meeting gave us the opportunity to discuss our impressions of our trip to date. Since we are all about game-based learning we summarised our experiences and impressions by means of a simple game. I’...
