Not by Occident: October 2014

http://notbyoccident.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

A freelance writer takes on a new assignment in Beijing. Friday, October 31, 2014. Today is November 1. Three years ago today we arrived in Beijing, so this is what we call our China-versary. Apple picking outside Beijing. Reporting for a story. Really. Family time inside the hutongs. Winning yet another bowling trophy. Hanging out on the Great Wall. Hiking with a special plant in Yunnan. Playing with fire in Shangrila. Hiking without falling (mostly). Sunday, October 26, 2014. Not a day goes by, though,...

Not by Occident: July 2015

http://notbyoccident.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

A freelance writer takes on a new assignment in Beijing. Monday, July 6, 2015. Even though I knew this day would come, I don’t much like it. I’m sitting in a very quiet house today because yesterday I made the very hard choice to help Smudge leave this world of pain. She was a good cat. When we adopted Smudge from the Humane Society, she got her name because she was just a tiny gray smudge of a thing, small enough to fit in the palm of our hand. I knew I would adopt her when I lifted her out of her c...

Not by Occident: May 2014

http://notbyoccident.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

A freelance writer takes on a new assignment in Beijing. Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Warning, warning: when this kind of clothing is for sale in the hotel gift shop, there may be problems with sand ahead. Dunhuang is very much a Muslim town, with dozens of halal restaurants lining the streets around the mosque. Dunes from the rooftop bar of our hotel. Georgia O'Keefe would have liked it. See those sand dunes behind Bob? Yep, we climbed them. Sand sculpture at the dunes. Ghengis, is that you? Hanging out at ...

Not by Occident: What It's Like to be Back

http://notbyoccident.blogspot.com/2014/12/what-its-like-to-be-back.html

A freelance writer takes on a new assignment in Beijing. Friday, December 12, 2014. What It's Like to be Back. I haven't posted in a while, both because I'm back home and because it's been so incredibly busy. But I wanted to gather a few thoughts about what it's been like to be home again. The intensity is diminishing over time, and I feel I'm in danger of feeling like three years in China was just an unreal dream, so maybe this will help. Someday I'll write that without italics.). And yet, I'm having so...

Not by Occident: September 2014

http://notbyoccident.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

A freelance writer takes on a new assignment in Beijing. Thursday, September 25, 2014. I'm sitting here in my parents' family room, watching the Yankees and Derek Jeter, just like the old days. But it's not my parents' family room any more. It's my mother's family room and it's the last few days of playing for the Yankees star. And even though this room was my father's favorite spot in the house, and the place where his life ended during a Yankees game in 2010, his memory is fainter after four years.

Please Don't Run Over Me. A Blog about Living and Working in Guangzhou, China. Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Go West Young Man. The altitude is a lot higher in Colorado, but it’s not so high that you immediately notice the difference. The effect comes in things like getting dehydrated more quickly, since you breathe more when the air is thinner. I guess it might affect cooking a bit also, but I doubt that will be a huge problem for me. Thursday, August 22, 2013. The Good Ol’ US of A. Go West Young Man.

Please Don't Run Over Me. A Blog about Living and Working in Guangzhou, China. Saturday, June 15, 2013. Grad School Part Five: Accepted! I can't remember the order for the other schools. I also got accepted into Michigan with a $10,000 scholarship, and into Pittsburgh. I have to admit that I didn't really consider these schools to much though since neither were really better than Denver and Denver had offered me a better deal. The other schools I did consider were SAIS, San Diego, and Columbia.

December 11, 2014. I don’t know what’s worst about this. That the US engaged in torture, that we lied about its effectiveness, that we kept doing it once it became obvious it wasn’t effective, that once it came to light the public defended it, or now that we know just how bad it was we’re still arguing over whether we should even be talking about it. We do know it happened. We know it got very bad. We know it was done poorly. What do we do now? But then what do we do? September 8, 2014. I seem to like th...

Famous Shakespeare Quotes That Shakespeare Never Said | Not By Shakespeare

Setting the record straight about what Shakespeare did and didn't say. Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. I wonder if somebody confused “drums of war” for “dogs of war” when they attributed this quote to.
