Microworlds: Mysterious Bryozoa

http://notes-from-dreamworlds.blogspot.com/2012/04/mysterious-bryozoa.html

Thursday, 19 April 2012. Some pond animals might not look attractive at first glance. The majority of people who encounter a bryozoa colony most likely wouldn't recognize what it is. A hairy warm? After all, even the mention of words "bryozoa"and "moss animals" alone provokes only one question —. What the heck is that? The truth is, molecular taxonomists have more or less the same question when approaching this group. Pretty rare thing in the animal kingdom. The vast majority of colonial organisms ar...

Microworlds: Fluorescent colors of the reef - why corals need colors

http://notes-from-dreamworlds.blogspot.com/2013/06/fluorescent-colors-of-reef-coral.html

Sunday, 16 June 2013. Fluorescent colors of the reef - why corals need colors. Unfortunately, such seemingly logical approach doesn't go well with corals for they have fluorescent pigments and their colouration depends on the light they are exposed to ( 1. To illustrate this, below is a picture of a coral under "normal" white light into which we are immersed in our out-of-water world:. The coral ( Favites pentagona. Looks brown and colorless. The barrier filter simply doesn't let any (reflected) blue lig...

Microworlds: Polarized light vision and marine crustaceans

http://notes-from-dreamworlds.blogspot.com/2013/07/polarized-vision-amphipod.html

Monday, 29 July 2013. Polarized light vision and marine crustaceans. This is a real image of a marine amphipod without any fancy photoshop tricks. Understanding these diamond-like patterns will require knowledge about polarized light and the role of polarized vision in marine invertebrates. Linearly polarized light oscillates in one direction and occurs quite often in nature. Most importantly, polarization emerges when light reflects. Similar to wearing glasses, but is akin to colour vision. In other...

Microworlds: Back from rainy Great Barrier Reef - some wildlife and macro/micro shots

http://notes-from-dreamworlds.blogspot.com/2013/03/back-from-rainy-great-barrier-reef-some.html

Friday, 22 March 2013. Back from rainy Great Barrier Reef - some wildlife and macro/micro shots. The Great Barrier Reef is renowned for amazing underwater sights. but the weather might seriously let you down. I spent most of the two-week long field trip indoors cursing the weather, yet managed to get a few shots. The field trip took place at Heron island, which is a large coral cay. University of Queensland has a research station there. Yeah I know, I suck at taking pictures of vertebrates. Unlike other ...

Microworlds: Hydra dance

http://notes-from-dreamworlds.blogspot.com/2012/04/hydra-dance.html

Saturday, 14 April 2012. Hydras are awesome dancers. They are very flexible and I could never get tired of taking pictures of all bizarre shapes and forms they take. There are at least two hydras on these pictures, a thinner one which you see above and a bigger one, which was on the first pic. The one above showing its mouth, although it's sealed and invisible. The one below caught a tiny water flea and is ready to consume it. Hydras are often covered with ciliates ( Kerona pediculus.

Notes from "Cole"

Saturday, July 14, 2012. 8220;You may not remember the time you let me go first. Or the time you dropped back to tell me it wasn't that far to go. Or the time you waited at the crossroads for me to catch up. You may not remember any of those, but I do and this is what I have to say to you:. Today, no matter what it takes,. We ride home together.”. Thursday, May 10, 2012. To my heterosexual, actively practicing Latter-Day Saint friends and family,. Am I the only one? Do other people know? What will people...

[the weekly entertainer]

It was midnight. Jess was walking down the stairs. She thought she heard something coming from downstairs. It's always better to check these things out. As she approached the kitchen she grew more and more anxious. She was usually calm, but this time something bothered her. It wasn't usual stuff. She didn't have to worry about anything in particular at that time. What was bothering her then? Poor little thing might have been scared by that weird noise. Kitten, come here! Kitty, kitty, come, come! This wh...
