Notes from a Defeatist: February 2011

http://notesfromadefeatist.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Notes from a Defeatist. Friday, February 11, 2011. Ben Johnston: String Quartets 1, 5 and 10 (Kepler Quartet; New World Records). One of the most exciting recordings that's come my way in recent years is the Kepler Quartet 's CD of four string quartets. Johnston, possibly one of the greatest composers you've never heard of, is a sometime apprentice of Harry Partch. Inventor of an ingenious notation system for Just Intonation. Has been released, and it's worth the wait. Stuff typed by petemaskreplica.

Notes from a Defeatist: Notes before a final (2): Harry Partch

http://notesfromadefeatist.blogspot.com/2013/03/notes-before-final-2-harry-partch.html

Notes from a Defeatist. Friday, March 15, 2013. Notes before a final (2): Harry Partch. So for years I had this vague idea in my head of Partch as this funny weird guy. Then I heard his music, and perhaps as importantly read his book Genesis of a Music. In which he explains in detail the theory and practice of his compositions. That was a major explosion in the middle of my preconceptions, the consequences of which I'm still getting to grips with. But it will, I hope, be a truthful one. Stuff to listen to.

Notes from a Defeatist: February 2013

http://notesfromadefeatist.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Notes from a Defeatist. Thursday, February 14, 2013. So, what have I been doing since the last time I declared I was reactivating this place and then didn't? Well, teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown for one, but that's another story. I wrote a fucking amazing. The conductor was scared of it though, so I had to write a less scary one. In two days. TWO DAYS! I'm brilliant, I am. I went to some gigs and listened to some music. Maybe I'll tell you about that sometime, maybe I won't. I did a bit.

Notes from a Defeatist. Saturday, November 09, 2013. Morty and Me: Appartment House perform Patterns in a Chromatic Field at the Purcell Room. Patterns in a Chromatic Field. Was the second piece by Morton Feldman I ever heard, and it remains one of my favourites. The first time I encountered it was in Huddersfield. In 1996, in a late-night concert straight after the one that featured the first Feldman piece I'd ever heard, For Samuel Beckett. Is only the second time I've heard it live. It's a more delibe...

Notes from a Defeatist: For Steve

http://notesfromadefeatist.blogspot.com/2013/05/for-steve.html

Notes from a Defeatist. Wednesday, May 08, 2013. There are plenty of people who knew Steve Martland better than I, and could tell you better stories than I. My principal encounter with him was in 2001, when my string piece " Infinite Breathing. This is a tiny thing I did today as a memorial. It seems dreadfully inadequate, but I couldn't not make the attempt. I hope it's not sentimental, at least. Steve wasn't a sentimental man, just a passionately caring one. Stuff typed by petemaskreplica.

Most of the time anyway. Monday, March 19, 2007. That takes the biscuit. I am ashamed. Yes, there was the roast beef, but if I'm honest with you, in recent times, my consumption of cookies has been astronomical. So much so that I feel strongly that I should found Cookie Addiction Anonymous. Consider this the first CAA meeting. Don't be shy. No one is here to judge. To put you at ease, let me go first. Hello My name is Day in Bed and I'm obsessed with cookies. Welcome Day in Bed! But enough about me.

Notes from Across the Pond | Observations of life on the right and left sides of the Atlantic

Notes from Across the Pond. Observations of life on the right and left sides of the Atlantic. Alabama Says “No” to Moore…. December 13, 2017. However, while this is great news for Democrats, it is far too soon for them to become complacent about the 2018 mid-term elections. The hurdle for Democrats reclaiming the Senate has been lowered considerably, but it will still be a challenge. It was good to see Steve Bannon get a black eye, but it was hardly a knockout punch for the pugilistic Mr. Bannon....The f...

Notes from a Daughter – on the other side of rebellion

Notes from a Daughter. So, ladies, I think we live in a world that is super quick to tell you, “You’re not good ENOUGH, you’re not doing ENOUGH, You are not Enough.”…BLAH… BLAH… BLAH! My hope is to just offer a little encouragement. Raising kids is hard enough, and raising girls can throw a whole other level of crazy in your life, I DO know that! I brought a whole slew of it to my parents… Who am I kidding? But now, its on the other side of rebellion. Notes from a Daughter. WordPress theme by Glowline.

Thursday, April 12, 2012. It's just a ball of cells. It's not even a baby. This child will never have any kind of quality of life. These are some excuses that women use to justify an abortion. They use these excuses because they don't want to admit to what they are really about to do. {murder their unborn child}. Young girls (and even women) sometimes don't realize how traumatic an abortion will be on them. You have to live the rest of your life knowing that it is because of you that your unborn chil...

Notes from a day dream believer. It does not do well to dwell on dreams. Sunday, 26 July 2015. So I have a confession. I've been running from this blog for several weeks. By that I mean I've been avoiding it, because I knew that in my next post I'd have to mention graduation (after all, my time at university, and leading up to it has been a constant theme during the past four years of this blog! Monday, October 25, 2010. Not in the mood lately. Just haven't been in the mood to post to this blog lately. I think it's because here is where I loved to write about life with Amy and Ben . and of course now it's just Ben and I. Amy has left such an enormous hole in our lives I think we're still trying to come to terms with her absence. We're feeling like this! I took Ben up to Start Point last week - we walked all the way round which Amy hadn't been able to do for a very long time. In fact she adored s...

Meet the Dog Walker. DINOS: Dogs in Need of Space. What’s a DINOS? Grab a DINOS Badge! To Birdie, With Love. Birdie died this year. We made the decision to let our sweet old girl go on April 4th. Birdie had kidney disease for months, but in the final week of March the disease finally began taking its toll on her little 15 year old body. We didn’t want her to suffer, so we said goodbye. Just a month before that, our cat Gus died suddenly of congestive heart failure. Thank you for letting me share my life ...
