Notes From a Fairy Princess In Exile

Notes From a Fairy Princess In Exile. Musings on fairy tales, myths, fables, writing, and the occasional fangirl squee about Baba Yaga. There is an opera of Hamlet. This is a thing that exists. Honestly, I enjoyed it; it is BEAUTIFUL. Seriously, I loved the music, the set, the costumes, the concept behind staging it all with a an iron curtain/fascist context. So, there are apparently a couple different versions of the opera—the original has Hamlet and Ophelia living at the end of the play. And he’s...

Notes From a Fairy Princess In Exile. Musings on fairy tales, myths, fables, writing, and the occasional fangirl squee about Baba Yaga. MN Opera Blogger Preview Night: Doubt. This last weekend, we saw the newest world premiere of the MN Opera’s New Works Initiative—you’ll remember the last ones we saw was SilentNight. I’ve been looking forward to this one, since frankly, the new operas have been among my favorites. BFCA Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress. It’s got good bones. I intend to fix that ASAP.

Notes From a Fairy Princess In Exile: Opera! Werther

http://www.notesfromafairyprincess.blogspot.com/2012/01/opera-werther.html

Notes From a Fairy Princess In Exile. Musings on fairy tales, myths, fables, writing, and the occasional fangirl squee about Baba Yaga. Its that time again! This time it was a Tragic Romance from the 1890s called Werther. Yeah if this is spoiling anything, you don't know opera very well. So…Here’s the good—as an opera, the music is perfect—the best, probably that I’ve seen. The set and costumes and casting choices are spot on perfect. Seriously folks—the dude who played Werther was wonderful. Werther is ...

Eloquent Pedestrian: February 2012

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Second Blog of Knitmas. On Christmas Eve I got two wonderful knitting-related presents. First the book Little Red in the City. And second a gift certificate to a new local yarn shop. I found the yarnery very appealing. It was cute and quiet, and had a good variety of yarn without being crowded. People were helpful but not aggressive, and seemed very knowledgeable. The yarn was decently priced, though my budget is still much closer to Joann's range. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Eloquent Pedestrian: July 2012

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 17, 2012. Lately I've posted quite a few pictures on facebook of my garden. I know not many people are interested in seeing picture after picture of the same plant in gradual stages of growth, but since this is most of what I'm doing these days, it seems appropriate. Every few times I post pictures, I get a similar type of comment:. Why is it full of weeds? 1 Is it in the foreground of the shot? 2 Is it planted in a nice straight grid or row? 3 Does it look prickly? Several years ago we let...

Monday, August 6, 2012. Go for the bronze! Beautiful weather for the first time in two months, and what am I doing? Sitting inside and watching the Olympics. Don't worry- I'll go outside soon. But it's just so easy to get sucked in to competition after competition. So unlike a lot of American professional sports, the Olympics isn't about a bunch of testosterone junkies hitting balls and each other to see who can make the most money in their career. It's a different kind of athleticism that inspires a...

Eloquent Pedestrian: Realism

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2013/01/realism.html

Tuesday, January 29, 2013. I have a problem. You see, when I accomplish something I seem to think I'm a master of it. I'll give you an example. Last year, in about March, Goodreads, my new website, had a little widget to set a goal for books read in a year. Some of my friends had set their goals, and they were all higher than I would have set mine. But I put in a number, and found I was already ahead of schedule. My goal in 2012 was 75 books, and I barely accomplished it. So what did I do?

Eloquent Pedestrian: December 2011

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 30, 2011. I used to read. Before all of this craziness with the mittens started, before I became a glove making fiend, before the holidays came and put a whirlwind through my house. Summer Knight: 5 Days. Neverwhere: 18 days (sort of). Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Titan's Curse 12 Days. The Clockwork Prince: 8 Days. So now, if you'll excuse me, I have some reading to do. Tuesday, December 20, 2011. Ode to Caron Simply Soft. My brain is broken. And I have finished three pairs of m...

Eloquent Pedestrian: The New Year

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-new-year.html

Monday, January 28, 2013. I don't usually support the idea of New Years Resolutions. In fact, I've never done them before. My only experience has been to watch others make and break resolutions over the course of a few weeks to months. So I was surprised as anyone when I came up with resolutions for the New Year. They're really goals, but I'm not one to make excuses, these are things I'm resolving to do in the New Year, so there's no point in bullshitting them to be anything but New Year's resolutions.

Eloquent Pedestrian: June 2012

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 27, 2012. I initially "finished" the socks a little short because I was worried about having enough yarn. I had plenty of yarn, and I decided to use more up by adding two inches to each sock. I ended up knitting four extra inches, and I still only stopped because I couldn't stand the things any more. That's me, doing my best impression of a foot form. Turns out it doesn't require any strange construction, and I think it took me about one week to knit, and that was at a slow pace:. I intro...

http://eloquentpedestrian.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 28, 2012. Put the Needles DOWN. I haven't posted here in a long time because I have been far too busy knitting. Which you'd think would be a good thing for a knitting blog, but blogs don't work if you don't write in them. I thought about doing a big post about Christmas time, but instead I'm going to give it to you in pieces. The first gift of yarn-mas was from my friend Kat, who bought me the stitchmarkers from Nerd Girl Yarns. Then I re-christened my gloves the Outer Spiral Arm glove ...

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish. They Take Not Their Courage from Anger. In a vision of the night I saw them,. In the battles of the night. 8216;Mid the roar and the reeling shadows of blood. They were moving like light,. Light of the reason, guarded. Tense within the will,. As a lantern under a tossing of boughs. Burns steady and still. With scrutiny calm, and with fingers. They bind up the hurts and the pain-writhen. Untired and defenceless; around them. With shrieks in its breath. That blinds the hot being;.

Notes From A Fellow Songwriter

Notes From A Fellow Songwriter. An Exploration Of Art and Creativity. Monday, November 30, 2009. Songwriting Is A Doing Word. Songwriting is a doing word.". This phrase has been running around inside of me for about five months now. It has marked the beginning of my return to songwriting, my renewed foray into my creative space, which had long been dusty and mis-placed. I may have heard it somewhere, but I am fairly certain it one of those divine relations, right words, right time to help me on my way.

Observations from Dominica and beyond. Thursday, May 22, 2008. Act III. Scene 1 - The woes fade out slowly. I've been back just over a week now. But this time it barely feels like I left in the first place. Most things went according to my grand. I was stoked, thinking it was all coming to an end as I arrived at my steamy apartment around 5:00 pm I thought back to about 4:15 am that morning, sitting in the airport terminal in Miami, burying the hatred of leaving my love in the intrigue of my first first-...

Notes From Africa

Monday, April 2, 2007. The Kenyan secondary school curriculum is standardized. The English book, for instance, goes so far as to dictate which lessons should be taught every week of the year. Any deviation from the prescribed national syllabus is strictly prohibited. But sometimes even within such a restricted educational regiment, kernels of creativity show up. And "Is there equality between races now? I have a dream that all Kenyans will live in harmony in houses such as bungalows, detached house and s...
