Notes from away: January 2017
http://notesfromaway.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html
Keeping in touch with family and friends. Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Joan and I drove back to the Wild Animal Park of the San Diego Zoo. This time we stopped in at the Gorilla exhibit, just at feeding time. The staff throw specific fruits and vegetables to individual gorillas and this one went against the wall to eat her stash. We noticed the small baby nearby, but there didn't seem to be any relationship between the two. As it turns out, she is the mother of this three month old Joey. One of the bird am...

Keeping in touch with family and friends. Thursday, December 31, 2015. Wichita Falls Tx to Las Cruces NM. We left after 8:30, and were confronted with the predicted dense fog. The weather warnings mentioned the probability of fog icing up roads and bridges. My eyes monitored the outside temperatures with concern; it was barely above freezing. Most of the morning, the fog went from limited visibility to dense fog, the picture below is sort of medium. Wednesday, December 30, 2015. Sullivan to Wichita Falls...

Keeping in touch with family and friends. Thursday, April 2, 2015. Ithaca NY Stittsville ON. We enjoyed two sleepovers in Ithaca: visiting Keith [Joan's cousin] and Marty. Both are fine and truly enjoying retirement in Ithaca. Ithaca in at the southern end of lake Cayuga, one of the five finger lakes. It's also the home of Cornell University where Keith taught. The next shot was made after walking closer to the waterfall. Here's another shot of the gorge right next to Cornell's very large campus. Closer ...

Keeping in touch with family and friends. Saturday, December 31, 2016. Denning to Casa Grande, Arizona. Today's crack of dawn occurred at a much more civilized 9am. Mind you, travelling westward makes you lose an hour every day or so, so actual crack of dawn and our body equivalent seem to be going in opposite directions. This next shot is aimed just to the left of the previous one. Note the large mountains in the background. This is a view from the other side of the highway: lots of water here too.

Keeping in touch with family and friends. Sunday, January 31, 2016. On Friday, Kathleen reserved a table for four at Romeo and Julieta, a neighbourhood hangout and restaurant. The name implies 'Italian' to me, but it's a polish run restaurant, with the compulsory large servings. Here's Joan, intently checking out the scene in the following picture. The ceiling is metal, the bar extensive, with Trump on the appropriate left, and the overall effect busy. Thursday, January 28, 2016. Here are a bunch of happ...

South of True North: December 2014
http://southoftruenorth.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
South of True North. Kathleen and Phillip in San Diego, writing to the folks "back home" in Canada. Monday, December 29, 2014. T is a fact of life that the beginning of a new year is the time to make a fresh start. Plans for what's better, what's different, what we'd like to accomplish are all common themes. I've never been a resolution sort of person, but ever since we bought a house in September, everything feels kind of fresh and full of potential. I'm not just talking about material things; learning ...
South of True North: A Not-So-Final Farewell.
http://southoftruenorth.blogspot.com/2011/06/not-so-final-farewell.html
South of True North. Kathleen and Phillip in San Diego, writing to the folks "back home" in Canada. Thursday, June 02, 2011. A billboard near our house. Until recently. Good, let's move on. That I bought an overpriced swimsuit just so I could truly enjoy it. For those of you who know me well, this is notable simply because I am not fond of swimming in the ocean. San Diego is beautiful in many ways, but the beaches here can't compare to Grayton. I guess we can't have everything. Photo Albums and Blog Links.

South of True North. Kathleen and Phillip in San Diego, writing to the folks "back home" in Canada. Monday, August 22, 2011. Within a week, we attended the wedding celebration of our good friends Jennie and Kevin. It was a delightful party with dancing and punch and video messages for the bride and groom to review later. I wonder if they ever did? I think our message was far from eloquent. No one warned me we'd be on camera! I could have prepared notes! And so, another month has rolled over us, leaving u...

South of True North. Kathleen and Phillip in San Diego, writing to the folks "back home" in Canada. Wednesday, January 05, 2011. Zen Pandas, the Sahara in Quebec, and Visiting Family. We're home, safe and sound, full of gratitude for family and friends, particularly the ones that put up with us in their home. Thank you! As most of you know, we're fond observers of human foibles and always keen to learn a few life lessons from these observations. This visit “back home” did not disappoint. To summarize, a ...

South of True North. Kathleen and Phillip in San Diego, writing to the folks "back home" in Canada. Wednesday, December 08, 2010. Air Travel and Punctuation. X-mas will soon be upon us and Kat and I are looking forward to visiting Canada. We've booked two weeks worth of time, which should be enough for visiting everyone and having enough 'down time' that it doesn't feel like constant running around. Kathleen's documentation for her massage certification finally arrived, yay! I figured work emails should ...

South of True North. Kathleen and Phillip in San Diego, writing to the folks "back home" in Canada. Tuesday, October 12, 2010. After much contemplation we have decided that our cat is good at all the things bad about felines, and bad at all the things good. She wins in the "I'm ignoring you" and "Do what I say" and sucks at such things as grace and being able to control her claws. You would figure after 14 years with claws she would have figured them out. With feedback from the other three Indian ex-pats...

Keeping in touch with family and friends. Saturday, January 14, 2017. The gull you'll recognize, the black bird is a Brandt's Cormorant, found in marine environments on the West Coast. It was cleaning lady day Friday so we headed out to La Jolla, where the rich live, where Teslas live, where the surfers do their thing, and all kinds of interesting things are there to be seen. We arrived when the tide was high. It was not a good time to be using the stairs that lead to the beach. We all went out for suppe...

Monday, January 2, 2017. 10 Things I Would Tell My “Younger” Yoga Teacher Self. A few years ago I was given the opportunity to reflect on the principles and lessons I had gleaned from several years of teaching yoga. It came to me as a list and was essentially the things I would tell my “younger” yoga teacher self. They also happen to be things that I am still learning. Offer what only you can give. That is enough. I am learning to celebrate that. This is the practice of vairagya. Have your own practice.

Notes from a Young City
Notes from a Young City. Wide-eyed observations and outings in and around Changwon, South Korea. Tuesday, June 17, 2008. First up was the Lotus Lantern Festival. For someone who appreciates the necessity of tea in everyday life, the Hadong Wild Tea Cultural Festival. The festival had a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, and special mention must go to Isobel, a volunteer from Seoul who provided English interpretation. Due to the rather grey weather, the festival wasn't particularly busy, so Isobel worke...
