Solo Run to Chitina | Notes From Beringia

Natural history, travel, Alaska, birds, biology, food, humor. Solo Run to Chitina. Truly stunning numbers of salmon had been racked up at the Miles Lake sonar. On the Copper River, and my netting anxiety was growing as each day passed and we didn’t have a solid plan in place to get down there and catch fish. PS Although I hauled my camera along, I was always too busy to take a picture. But I need to add one, and this is the only one that really counts:. Copper River red salmon in the freezer.

Surf and Surf | Notes From Beringia

http://www.notesfromberingia.com/surf-and-surf

Natural history, travel, Alaska, birds, biology, food, humor. Copper River red salmon are some of the tastiest fish we’ve ever had, and we haven’t grown tired of them despite how many we’ve eaten over the years. We still tend to fix them very simply. Our basic smoke-grilling recipe is the same we’ve used for years (and is here. Red salmon fillets ready for the grill. Sashimi dipped in soy and wasabi. Smoke-grilled red salmon with just a little salt and pepper. Smoke-grilled Salmon with Pineapple Sauce.

Natural history, travel, Alaska, birds, biology, food, humor. Category Archives: Natural history. We’ve had an extraordinarily wet summer. Notes from Behind the Blockade | Life, politics and nonviolent resistance inside the Gaza Strip

Notes from Behind the Blockade. Life, politics and nonviolent resistance inside the Gaza Strip. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Drones in the Shower, F-16s on the Street: On Leaving Gaza. December 20, 2011. Gaza is not a pleasant place to be. The Israeli occupation smothers and suffocates, it makes one highly attuned to one’s surroundings in unnatural ways, or ways that were once natural but should no longer be. I continued on with my shower, washing my face. The water had a curio...

Notes From Below | Just another WordPress.com weblog

Just another WordPress.com weblog. Airbrushing in Just Transition. May 19, 2011. Dónal O’Driscoll, dysophia.wordpress.com. Examines the origins of ‘Just Transition’ and asks whether it can fulfill those aspirations, or whether it is simply a ‘nice sounding’ phrase allowing campaigners to paper over divisive issues. However, as a concept, its break-through moment came when the Canadian Labour Congress [CLC] released their 2000 report Just Transition for workers during Environmental Change [ii]. Since then...

Notes From Beringia | Natural history, travel, Alaska, birds, biology, food, humor

Natural history, travel, Alaska, birds, biology, food, humor. Coyote in the Boombah? When I was out today, I remembered that yesterday I’d caught a faint whiff of a funky, skunk-like aroma. I went back to that spot and spent some time looking, and sure enough, the large canid had scent marked. It was a female. I bent down and picked up a piece of the very darkly marked snow, stuck it under my nose, and took a good sniff. Yowza! This entry was posted in Uncategorized. But this year is dramatically differe...

Notes from between the barriers

Notes from between the barriers. A good day for chickens. Friday 9th November 2013. Today was the Orkney Cage Bird show in Kirkwall. Now I know that the pedantic ones among you will consider that chickens are not what we would normally consider to be cage birds. They are however, I am sure you will agree, birds. They are also, as you can see from the photos, in cages. I rest my case. The cage bird show in fact has cage birds, pigeons, poultry , rabbits and cavies. Andalusian Hen 1st Light Hen. They had b...
