A Fen Birders Log. There is something magical about the sight of short-eared owls soaring across the rough pastures of the Great Fen. It has been a treat to see them over the winter months, twisting their heads to and fro as they scan the ground for prey. Last week I was surprised to see a single individual hunting just a few yards away from where I stood near New Decoy Farm. I hadn’t seen them this far east before; it just shows how much excellent foraging habitat is available on the site. March 8, 2015.

A Fen Birders Log. I recently went for a stroll at Woodwalton Fen with a couple of birding friends. As we walked over the bridge we spotted a whitethroat and a red kite circling above. There were also 12 swallows chattering – nesting somewhere near the Natural England office. From the North Hide we spotted 2 buzzards, lazily riding the thermals over the reedbed. A Fen Birders Log. A flock of around 100 goldfinches have been feeding near Tower Farm since Autumn. They tend to roost in the roadside trees and feed in the field opposite. On Sunday I spotted a small number of redpolls in amongst them. A small poplar wood to the west of here was cleared last year to encourage the growth of willows and alders. Quite a list for a couple of hours – and it’s encouraging to see lapwing out on the newly restored areas.
