Inventing our lives one tangential anecdote at a time
Apropos of Nothing: February 2012
http://nothingapropos.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Inventing our lives one tangential anecdote at a time. Monday, February 27, 2012. Backyard thugs unmasked: Sciurus carolinensis. We've had our share of losses at the teeth of the local rodent population. Just before bloom time each year, squirrels decapitate my spring bulbs, and rabbits have decimated many of our small trees and shrubs while searching for food in past harsh winters (see here. Can you spot it? Look for the tree limb with its bark completely stripped. Caught in the act. Oooooh, you varmint!
Apropos of Nothing: Tackling the Backsplash
http://nothingapropos.blogspot.com/2011/05/tackling-backsplash.html
Inventing our lives one tangential anecdote at a time. Sunday, May 1, 2011. Yes, Will and Kate are lending a hand. So much for the Globe and Mail keepsake wedding insert. We'll soon be in a quandary over grout colours. We have matching grout in the bathroom, but I think we might prefer to emphasize the subway pattern in the kitchen. I remember being vaguely disappointed when our bathroom walls lost their definition to the matching coloured grout. The ungrouted corner showing clear shadow lines. I think f...

Apropos of Nothing: January 2011

Inventing our lives one tangential anecdote at a time. Friday, January 28, 2011. The tyranny of choice (or why I can't choose my marble edge profile). The built-up ogee step edge in honed statuario on the bathroom vanity. Noisette grigio, white medusa, calacatta cielo. Our currently tagged slab- calacatta carrara extra (calacatta and carrara in one slab! So, really, what's our problem? We are in the midst of a luxurious kitchen renovation. How can we complain? So I guess choice is not the real tyrant at ...
Apropos of Nothing: The Long and Winding Stair, Part 1: Flipping the Stairs
http://nothingapropos.blogspot.com/2012/05/long-and-winding-stair-part-1-flipping.html
Inventing our lives one tangential anecdote at a time. Friday, May 4, 2012. The Long and Winding Stair, Part 1: Flipping the Stairs. Looking up the narrow stairway. Looking left from the front door. The initial vestibule walls and the doors are long gone, but several years ago we hatched a plan to open up the stairs and flip their orientation to give us a much more open front entry hall. Last summer, we began to execute our plan. Looking down the narrow stairway. The new "flipped" stair plan. Pink foam i...

The Krakow Files: January 2009
http://krakowfiles.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 25, 2009. One final note about my Christmas tree . . . Finally, somewhat desperately, we just dumped it in a pile of snow against one wall and took off. I then spent the next 40 minutes sweeping up all the fallen needles, so the trail couldn't be tracked to my door. I did consider creating a trail to another neighbour's door, but figured since everyone else keeps their tree up until the end of January, it was going to be pretty easy to realize the Canadian was the culprit. Although the Po...
The Krakow Files: Buty

Monday, July 6, 2009. I finally downloaded all of the photos I took the last few months I was in Europe and have spent the last few hours looking through them. This snapshot is for K and P who each bought something like 6 pairs of shoes while visiting me in Poland in early April. Oddly, I don't think I purchased even one pair in the entire two years I lived there. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). You can go home again. View my complete profile. Hi, I'm Jenn. The Krakow Files: Young Poland
http://krakowfiles.blogspot.com/2009/05/young-poland.html
Sunday, May 24, 2009. Last Saturday, on my flight back to Toronto, I spent a few hours reading about my favourite period in Polish art: the Young Poland. Movement. The book was a farewell gift from a friend and provides art and architectural examples of the movement in and around Krakow. Several of my favourite churches, galleries, and buildings were listed in the guide, and I was thoroughly enjoying reading about Krakow, when I turned the page and saw a picture of this guy:. Your neighbor, Sue.
The Krakow Files: February 2009
http://krakowfiles.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 23, 2009. My grandma has three children (all daughters), ten grandchildren, and fourteen (I think) great-grandchildren. In honour of her 90th birthday, many of us met in Toronto yesterday to celebrate. Not all of us were at the party, but it was the largest gathering of the clan that I can remember. My entire immediate family (parents, two brothers, two sis-in-laws and 4 nieces) flew in from Western Canada for the festivities. Sunday, February 22, 2009. Winter travel: Part 2. Then I was ...
The Krakow Files: July 2009

Sunday, July 26, 2009. Is the architecture in Krakow. I even sort of miss the cobblestones (although my ankles don't):. This art supply shop is located only a few steps away from my former flat in Krakow. I walked by it almost every day, always peering in the windows to see what was new, yet never actually going inside. Wednesday, July 8, 2009. I took this pic my last night in Krakow, at the flower market in the Rynek, and completely forgot about it until I downloaded my photos a few days ago. The first ...
The Krakow Files: October 2008
http://krakowfiles.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 20, 2008. Along came a spider. Hydrangeas have long been one of my favourite flowers. My grandparents had huge bushes in their front yard that bloomed unbelievably every year for over 50 years. I don't know whether it's the pinky, blue, purpley colour, or the memory of my grandparents that attracts me to the flowers, but I can't pass by them without stopping for a second look. The spider is barely visible, but if you look carefully you can just see the legs. Sunday, October 12, 2008.

The Krakow Files: Derek and Flannery
http://krakowfiles.blogspot.com/2009/05/derek-and-flannery.html
Sunday, May 17, 2009. Here's the first anecdote of many about Derek:. Soon after I moved to Toronto from Waterloo, Derek was accepted into the publishing program at Centennial College. We ended up being roommates, living in a 2nd floor apartment in an old house on Keele St in High Park. So Flannery she was, and still is. I can't imagine her as being anything else. Yet even though Derek gave me a Flannery O'Connor novel (aptly titled "A Good Man is Hard to Find") for Christmas that year, it was years befo...
The Krakow Files: You can go home again
http://krakowfiles.blogspot.com/2009/07/you-can-go-home-again.html
Sunday, July 5, 2009. You can go home again. I'm lying on the couch in my newly renovated living room. I've just cleaned it in anticipation of showing it off to my grandmother tomorrow afternoon. I guess I've been back in Canada now for 6 or 7 weeks and I finally feel like I belong here. Plus, it is summer and despite a strike by the city employees (creating mounds of garbage everywhere and shutting down public services like pools and ferries), Toronto is a pretty good place to be. The trees are gree...

Apropos of Nothing
Inventing our lives one tangential anecdote at a time. Thursday, May 17, 2012. If a tree falls. The gorgeous, irreplaceable sugar maple canopy, before. And the gap in the canopy, now. And here's why we did it:. The devastating split in the trunk. Can you blame us? The canopy looking southwest (it's the middle tree that's doomed). And looking north and south (the trunk illuminated by the sun). Sawdust (in increasingly large chunks), rot, insects, lack of root flare. Going, going, going, going. Still, mayb...

Nothing Arizona | Just another WordPress.com site
Just another WordPress.com site. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. July 2, 2011. Town of Nothing Arizona. Founded 1977. Elevation 3269ft. In the middle of the desert stands a small town called “Nothing”. Until 2010 there was a population of 4 people who resided there. The entire population ran a gas stop and garage. The gas station had a flat bed truck selling rocks and minerals found nearby as local souvenirs. Behind the gas station, down the embankment, was a small scrap heap. But the...
