Always together...: October 2012
http://our-family-school.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 17, 2012. There were three things this evening that happened in rapid succession that did not make me excited in a happy way. First, Sambo came running upstairs crying, "George just lost her tail! Then, Belle came running into the house calling, "Sambo lost his glasses in the neighbor's giant leaf pile! Finally, Edison came in the baby's room while I was rocking him and exclaimed, "Twinkie just took off his poopy diaper and is spreading it all over the front room! The grandma asked how...

Monday, September 17, 2012. Debunking common myths #1: I just don't have the patience. I think homeschooling is a nice idea, but I just don't have the patience.". I hear this All. The.Time. My response is always, "Welcome to the club! I think if they sincerely asked that question- most people don't- and they decided to homeschool- and not everyone would- they'd soon see that homeschooling isn't about patience. It is certainly something that everybody learns, but it's not usually a make-or-break deal.

Always together...: Nutcracker Raffle Ticket sales 2013

Thursday, October 3, 2013. Nutcracker Raffle Ticket sales 2013. The kids spent the better part of the last 3 days working on putting this video together. I helped a little bit (I'm even recognized as helping by being an "Edeitor" in the credits! But mainly they did it. It has a couple of cult references to Kid History. See if you can find them! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Homeschooling, cloth-diapering, happy, happy mommy! My dancer, reader and all-around princess. My thinker and inventor. Back t...

Always together...: Non-Opening Days
http://our-family-school.blogspot.com/2013/10/non-opening-days.html
Sunday, October 20, 2013. Mondays are our non-Opening days. Singing at a local nursing home and often having a family or two over afterwards take up the day. When I was still trying to wrap my mind around being okay with "not doing school" one day a week (that would be last week), I realized how amazing our "non-Opening" days really are. Sambo keeps the little boys out of the room by playing with them in the dining area, and the older kids sing with me. Then one of the girls had her piano lesson with me ...

Always together...: December 2012
http://our-family-school.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 14, 2012. When I first heard about today's events- the elementary school shooting in CT and the 20 children and 6 adults who were mercilessly killed- my knee-jerk reaction was, "I'm so glad my kids are home with me! Immediately after having that thought, however, I remembered back to when Dr. Jones and I decided to keep Belle home for school. My reaction was fear- why was there even a need. To have security in an elementary school? Perhaps one of the greatest helps for me was a story tha...

Sunday, May 26, 2013. What Edison does at church. Edison was asked to give a talk in Primary today on the Word of Wisdom. He prepared it with a little help from Dr. Jones and I:. During Sacrament meeting he wrote this out, also explaining the Word of Wisdom, only this time in JavaScript:. I'm pretty sure they mean the same thing. I think. Sunday, May 5, 2013. Reptiles and amphibians (April 30). I love our Parks District homeschool classes! The corn snake was pretty darn cool! It has great ideas on how to...

Always together...: Not good enough
http://our-family-school.blogspot.com/2013/09/not-good-enough.html
Sunday, September 29, 2013. I've had a thought percolating in my head for a while now, and it's a thought that worries me. It is something that affects almost all women, and probably men, and is growing in it's intensity. Since it affects almost all women, and I would dare to say all. Mothers, it naturally affects all families, which in turn affects our communities, nation and world. It is a thought that is best summed up in my friend's story with her pediatrician. Why is my offering not enough? I recent...

To Grade or Not to Grade…Is that the Question? | The Reflective Teacher
https://tcsamaripa.wordpress.com/2013/06/04/to-grade-or-not-to-grade-is-that-the-question
June 4, 2013. To Grade or Not to Grade…Is that the Question? I recently read a fabulous article. By a middle school principal who is asking very important questions about what grading should look like. Make sure you read the entire article! I had originally planned to write my own two cents, but then the title of this post popped into my head. I started to think, could I actually take Hamlet’s soliloquy and create a monologue of my own about grading? So without further ado…. And by opposing end them?

Perpetual Pick Up Sticks | The Reflective Teacher

January 13, 2015. Perpetual Pick Up Sticks. I’m technically doing the work of two jobs. I teach a 10th grade English class and am also the high school literacy coach. I’m currently (ok perpetually) struggling between finding enough prep time and helping teachers locate literacy resources, coaching teachers, and developing our new sustained silent reading program. Nearly 2 years ago and much better I might add. Writing in the Digital Age. About Time We Learn! 3 thoughts on “ Perpetual Pick Up Sticks.
