Teaching Physics with Fun

On Winter edutainment Physics. Teaching Physics with Fun. For those of us living on the 42nd parallel, winter outdoor play is limited to activities that can be fun while wearing seventeen layers of clothing. As such, I'm always looking for sources of entertainment for my little-un's. It's always a bonus when I find one that represents a learning experience too. Kids love balloons and kids love water. Combining can be dangerously exciting! Needless to say we had fun filling the balloons. Then I blew their...

Stereo Photogrammetry ala Jig Lab
http://tanagram.com/2014/02/08/stereo-photogrammetry-the-new-mocap
Stereo Photogrammetry ala Jig Lab. Software has documented beginnings of more than 20 years ago. It is, quite simply, the calculation of a three dimensional object or space through the measurement of differences between two photos. Cameras sitting a fixed distance apart sharing a view of the same target take a picture simultaneously. A computer processes those images along with calibration images to create 3D models. Here is an example of a capture rig. One of our capture rigs. The following potato chip ...

Meet Hunter, a Synthetic Vision Robot

On Humanitarian Aid robots. Meet Hunter, a Synthetic Vision Robot. She is an autonomous synthetic vision robot that determines the exact position of the air vehicle in relation to the drop target, fuses data with IMU / GPS data and calculates the ideal, precise approach path and delivery timing including winds compensation ultimately delivering a 3000lb payload on a 20 x 20 target. Pretty impressive, eh? Here’s how the system works. 64 numbers (really addresses) might not seem like a lot but when an emer...

I build robots that ... err ... build robots?
http://tanagram.com/2014/02/14/i-build-robots-that-err-build-robots
I build robots that . err . build robots? 3D printing is a fantastic technology. From the simplest additive or subtractive platforms, each "printer" is a robot with complex electronics, actuators, and tool heads. And they are self replicating (pause for dramatic effect). As I mentioned in this blog before, I'm teaching young adults how to "imagineer" as we build a MendelMax II. Here is a video of a MendelMax printing a replacement structural element. Here is a shot of my "Presentation-in-the-round.".
