Reduce transactions to increase MySQL performance dramatically. I just discovered a way to speed up some complex Rails actions by about 3x: manually wrap the various updates performed in the controller action (in this case) in a single transaction. This might seem obvious, but I was surprised by the scale of the improvement. Of course, the other benefit is that if a single update fails, then all of the updates are rolled back.
