唐高宗李治登基 公元649年 之后，其师僧伽大师 今新疆人 来到长江出海口的狼山上建寺。 明朝 初期成祖年间 1402 1424 ，冯大球太守坐镇通州，调集大量军队，拔除了峨嵋山盐霸，并上书朝廷，改此大殿为寺院，名 普贤寺 ，供奉普贤菩萨。 冯太守因剿灭私盐有功，被准在通州城里建 太守府 ，并在大门外面竖一对旗杆，以显威势，至今南通城内仍有 冯旗杆巷。 明成祖朱棣 1360 1424 是明朝第三代皇帝，1402 1424年在位。 死后原庙号为 太宗 ，百多年后由明世宗朱厚熜改为 成祖 ，明成祖的统治时期被称为 永乐盛世。
