Saturday, March 23. Soused Root Vegetable Salad with Feta. I'm still waiting for that first flush of spring to bring in the new seasons produce.come on! Whilst we wait, here is an interesting salad that uses a quick pickling liquor to add a sweet, sour and spicy dimension to shredded root vegetables. You will need a Japanese Mandolin to shed the vegetables as doing it with a knife is hard going - be careful , they are lethal bits of kitchen kit! Goes great with oily fish such as mackerel (minus the feta).

Sunday, October 27. Bacon, Sage and Onion Suet Pudding. I went to visit my mum this weekend and she surprised me by serving this suet pudding for supper. She has been cooking this the whole of my life and yet it had completely fallen out of memory. It gots me thinking that I had never before cooked this dish, nor had I seen this pudding anywhere except on my mum's dining table. Does this make it a family heirloom? Can suet based food become an heirloom? I'm going to immortalise it on my humble blog.

Friday, June 28. Gooseberry and Elderflower Meringue Tart. More usually made with lemon, this variant is inspired by Mark Hix but uses my mums recipe and gooseberries from my garden. You want the fruit filling to be sharp to offset the sweet meringue. I was surprised by how sweet my gooseberries were which upset the balance of the tart a little - make sure you add the sugar to taste after adding the cordial. Gooseberries - 500g, twigs and stalks removed. Elderflower cordial - 2 tbsp. Plain Flour - 300g.
