Reflections of a clinical nurse

Reflections of a clinical nurse. Sunday, April 27, 2008. Is it time for a nursing moratorium? Dragging myself to a shift has been a struggle for a while now, but I only realised the extent of my malaise when I sat down now to write - going back over my (rather sparse) posts, I discovered it was a way back in October that I first reported my almost decision. To quit. That's six months of hating my job. Horizontal violence still lives - in fact it's kicking along quite strongly in my corner of the world.

Reflections of a clinical nurse: what's the point of policies?

http://nursereflections.blogspot.com/2007/04/whats-point-of-policies.html

Reflections of a clinical nurse. Tuesday, April 24, 2007. What's the point of policies? I left work feeling quite discouraged the other day, just wondering what's the point of it all. Why do I even bother encouraging graduates to demonstrate excellence in their practice? Nobody else cares. Why should I? Broad brush strokes, broad brush strokes! Come knock off time, I was infuriated. What a cheek, swanning into nursing and refusing to follow policies and protocols because after two months of practice ...

Reflections of a clinical nurse: the influence and power of being a nurse

http://nursereflections.blogspot.com/2008/02/influence-and-power-of-being-nurse.html

Reflections of a clinical nurse. Thursday, February 21, 2008. The influence and power of being a nurse. Conversely, what I say may make no difference at all. Which nurse hasn't experienced the mortification of educating a patient only to have them ask the doctor the self same questions? Of course when the doctor advises them of the exact same information we provided, they sit up and listen as if it is news they have never heard before and we, silly nurses, are left looking incompetent and uninformed.

Reflections of a clinical nurse: welcome to nursing

http://nursereflections.blogspot.com/2007/02/welcome-to-nursing.html

Reflections of a clinical nurse. Wednesday, February 21, 2007. The year is nearly two months old, but in some ways I feel as if my working year has just begun! The 2007 graduate nurses are out on the wards, and I have the task of smoothing the path of another cohort as they ease their way into the workforce. The graduates are all excited and jittery and earnest in their efforts to be a good nurse. I am smiling and encouraging them in an effort to provide good support. The 2006 graduates are in the proces...

Reflections of a clinical nurse: August 2006

http://nursereflections.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html

Reflections of a clinical nurse. Monday, August 28, 2006. As I’ve said before, feeling like an impostor is normal. Doing nothing to move on is the problem! Which is exactly the situation I’ve been in. I’ve tiptoed around the wards feeling out of my depth, developed the art of avoidance, and hidden how uncertain I feel from the world. This in turn has left me feeling ineffective I’ve never really mastered how to assess, educate and support graduates. These are some things I can feel positive about. On the...

Reflections of a clinical nurse: violins and nursing errors

http://nursereflections.blogspot.com/2007/04/violins-and-nursing-errors.html

Reflections of a clinical nurse. Tuesday, April 03, 2007. Violins and nursing errors. I had a violin lesson with my teacher this evening and, in between the making of music, our conversation turned to teaching methods. Strangely I found a parallel between this and nursing. My teacher's explanation struck a chord with me, since the principle has relevance to evaluating the practice of graduate nurses. Admittedly when I make an error on the violin I do not place anyone at risk, where a clinical error can h...

happy chatter: March 2007

http://happychatter.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 31, 2007. I've always been rather dubious about the health benefits of breakfast cereals, a state of mind brought about by high school home science classes I'm sure. (do you know how much salt is hidden away in a packet of cornflakes? As a rule I stick with Weet-Bix. Low fat, low sugar, high fibre and all those other good things. That is, I stick with Weet-Bix when I'm not having a toast mood, and then I munch on soy and linseed bread spread with yummy Vegemite. Immediately upon arriving ...

Wednesday, August 30, 2006. If this blog is anything to go by, spring is taking forever to arrive! I've written about daffodils, increasing length of days, and now spring blossom! Not only will I be glad when spring comes, but so will all of you - then I'll be able to move on to writing about summer! It really is beautiful here at the moment though. All over the city the trees are covered in blossoms. Just driving down the street is breathtaking. Posted by cecily @ 3:16 pm. Links to this post. Experiment...

happy chatter: October 2006

http://happychatter.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 31, 2006. I've had a headache since Saturday morning. Not a big thumper - just there when I wake up, there all day and there when I fall asleep. Not bad enough to take panadol, but intruding on my thought processes none-the-less. (Which partly explains a blog-free week. The other part of the explanation is extreme busyness that left no time for ruminating). Hmmm, what is the cause of this rumbling pain that roles around inside my brain? I need a holiday! happy chatter: September 2006

http://happychatter.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 29, 2006. Personally I dislike convenience food. I would rather walk home in the rain without a coat than resort to cooking from packets and jars. OK, maybe that was an exaggeration, but it conveys my abhorence of plastic food - I like cooking from scratch with wholesome, real ingredients. (I come from a long line of supercooks, so I have a lot to live up to). Yeah I know. Those cute, cuddly little wallabies. how could we even consider eating them? Casalinga' here I come for ready-made ...

http://happychatter.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 29, 2006. Remember the car wash? Oh yeah. the car wash. I nearly forgot! Well, this morning it looked like rain and I didn't want the car looking spic and span to then be rained on did I? Then Frank went out this afternoon, taking the car with him, so there was just no way I could wash it. Would that be OK? Posted by cecily @ 10:57 pm. Links to this post. happy chatter: November 2006

http://happychatter.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 30, 2006. As of today I'm going to make a stand - no more pollution. No, I'm not talking about the end of NaBloPoMo and the sometimes cyber polluting twaddle I have peddled for thirty days. That will. End, today even, but I'm talking about something far more serious. No more the lackadaisical attitude. Plonk another industry right beside it and the pollution may be doubled. Or more than doubled. In my backyard, effecting the people I love. No more pollution I say. Links to this post.

Sunday, July 30, 2006. Oh my goodness. as if you didn't have enough to read without me adding another. BUT I have just produced my first ever webpage. yes, that's right. My VERY OWN webpage! Not that it's anything great (it reads like this "This is my first homepage. I am learning what to do. I've never done anything like this before. And I have no idea how to upload it to the internet so you can view the marvel, but there it is, on my computer screen. A marvel indeed! Sorry Frank - no tea tonight! Howev...
