A Short History of Nutcrackers. Nutcrackers of one form or another have been used by man ever since he learnt to pick up a rock and used it to smash open a nut shell. Some early documented references to nutcrackers are :. Geoffrey Chaucer (circa 1343 - 1400) is reputed to refer to a nutcracker in the Canterbury Tales. 1372 in France, Jeanne dEvreux refers to a device in silver for breaking nuts worth nine Francs. 1650 in England, an entry in Discolliminium says He was fain to make a nutcracker of it.

This not-quite-pair of objects are made of a hardwood (beech, possibly) and are 36 cms long. They are both covered with fine herringbone pattern carving and have the same rectangular aperture in the centre. Each aperture has a hole in each end, one of which has the remnants of what looks like a piece of string. They both have a single hole in one side of the aperture. Are they related to knitting sheaths in some way? Or perhaps some kind of stay busk? The bells have a Morris Dancing-sounding jingle.

This first image is of a painting,. The oldest nutcracker that Im aware of is in a museum in Tarent, Italy. It dates to the 3rd/4th century BC and is in the form of a pair of hands. The Leavenworth museum (who I thank for permission to reproduce this image) owns the following nutcracker which is Roman, dating to between 200 BC and 200 AD. It was excavated in the 1960s. Nutcracker Number : 9. A very nice boxwood nutcracker in the form of a hatted man with stick and dog. Probably Swiss or French and a one-off - not tourist ware. Great detail in his face, coat and in the dog sitting at his side. There is a small crack at the back of his head(see 5th picture) but he is structurally sound and has great colour. Price : 290 / $480 / 299 Euros. Nutcracker Number : 98. PATENT 29795 (slightly indistinct). 280 / $405 / 295 Euros. Nutcracker Number : 99. Date : Late 18th century.
