NW Chicken Little: October 2014
http://nwchickenlittle.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Blog about moving from the Mid-Atlantic to the Pacific Northwest, and starting an urban farm. Friday, October 10, 2014. Last weekend we harvested 23lbs honey off of our hives. The initial hive is failing (high mite load and older queen). The split hive is looking strong going into winter. Lastly, the biggest news of all. We purchased a house on 5 acres! NW Chicken Little: Plans for spring
http://nwchickenlittle.blogspot.com/2014/01/plans-for-spring.html
Blog about moving from the Mid-Atlantic to the Pacific Northwest, and starting an urban farm. Thursday, January 30, 2014. It got me to thinking though, I hate my old chicken tractor sitting unused the majority of them time. It seems like there got to be an animal I can use it to house. So Im going to be researching how feasible it is to use it for some other type of bird. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Watermark template. Powered by Blogger.

NW Chicken Little: March 2014
http://nwchickenlittle.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Blog about moving from the Mid-Atlantic to the Pacific Northwest, and starting an urban farm. Thursday, March 13, 2014. Monday I got a free dump truck load of arborist mulch. About time! My chicken run was down to mud and dirt! The mountain of mulch. The chicken run before the mulch. I had to jack up the coop onto blocks, so I could have the coop sit on the new layer of mulch. Supercedure! | Bee Nerdy

An eco-geek's foray into backyard beekeeping. Laquo; The Second Summer. Queenless at the Start of Fall. August 23, 2013 by Kimberly Christensen. In the bottom center of this photo you can see a supercedure cell! The great thing about my hives’ new rooftop location is that I can see the landing boards from my son’s room. This means I make up a lot of excuses to go in there, which has the side-benefit of my son’s room being much cleaner than it used to. Are they on time-out? She was so strong! A fellow bee...

An eco-geek's foray into backyard beekeeping. Laquo; Cleansing Runs and Clusters. February 20, 2013 by Kimberly Christensen. The farmers at Milkwood led me to this free e-book about bees, written 100 years ago. You can read online or download it. I’m looking forward to exploring this one with the kids, and to comparing what we know now with what we knew about bees 100 years ago. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. An eco-geek's foray into backyard beekeeping. Queenless at the Start of Fall. September 27, 2013 by Kimberly Christensen. A yellow jacket eats a bee. Depressing. I am wondering what took me so long…. Soon, preparations for winter will begin. The chill is in the air. I am going to break out my trusty quilt again for the surviving hive and hope for the best! On September 27, 2013 at 7:54 pm. Can you put in a frame with eggs from another hive so they will make a new queen? Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

An eco-geek's foray into backyard beekeeping. Laquo; Springtime Preparations. August 1, 2013 by Kimberly Christensen. Through my lack of blogging for the past several months, I can deduce that I am significantly less anxious about beekeeping in year two than I was in year one! July finds both hives doing well and requiring little attention (for the moment), so I will attempt to recount the happenings of the winter and spring. Posted in Biologicial/Natural Beekeeping. An eco-geek's foray into backyard beekeeping. Laquo; Previous Post. March 21, 2013 by Kimberly Christensen. Well, thanks to a mild winter, my handy-dandy bee quilts and dumb luck, it appears that both hives have survived winter. These warm afternoons have brought my bees out in droves, and they have been returning to the hives laden with pollen. The bright gold crocus pollen was particularly lovely. Luckily one of my bee-mentors, Corky, is going to supervise the operation. But it looks like there are!

An eco-geek's foray into backyard beekeeping. Laquo; Queenless at the Start of Fall. February 14, 2014 by Kimberly Christensen. The crocuses on Sunday. The crocuses (with bees! The hive with a small blanket of snow (Sunday). Today was a lovely false-spring day, following snow(! 4 days ago. The Galactica bees flocked to the newly blooming crocuses in the front yard and returned to the queen-ful hive laden with bright yellow pollen. Hooray! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Blog about moving from the Mid-Atlantic to the Pacific Northwest, and starting an urban farm. Tuesday, November 18, 2014. We've finally "bought the farm" so to speak. Well, bought a farm. Well, some land that will be a farm. :). About 3 weeks ago we moved into our new house, on 5 acres, at the foothills of the Cascades. In a very small town of 1,400 people. Actually, we aren't even "in" the town, but a few miles outside of city limits. We've added 12 hens and a Rooster (my first! The front acre is cleare...
